Title: Wingless Sherpa
Post by: Nefarious on November 29, 2012, 04:29:26 PM
Was applying Vinyl decals to a work truck yesterday, and as we came up the hill I saw this beast up on the hill. I nearly ninja rolled out of the car to see what it was. It's a C-23 Sherpa, they fly them out of the local airport here. Apparently this one was in Desert Storm. The wings, no engines, were behind it on jacks, but I didnt get a pic.

That picture doesn't do it justice.

What do they fly them localy for?  I've always liked the Short Sherpa - to this day I think its engineer must have never given up on a dream that began in his parents living room the day they came home with a new TV and gave him the box to play with.

A very rare military plane imho, only a handful of a dozen ever made I think.

There is some kind of Army or USAF wing here at Bridgeport, WV. I was in a small industrial park area that is not connected to the airport. I'll drive over there again to see what it is.

That is one of the Alaska Army Guard Sherpas.  They fly over my house quite often.  Used for admin cargo hauling, transportation, etc.  The fuselage may be one of the former Alaska aircraft, the local unit has deployed to the middle east several times.
