It sucks. I get acute onsets in my right big toe, and sometimes in my left big toe as well.
If it's in your toe, see a Podiatrist and have him/her prescribe Colchicine. It can alleviate the pain and swelling rapidly.
When I'm out, I take multiple Aleve or 800mg of Ibuprofin to help with the pain and inflammation. I repeat every 3-4 hours for a day or two.
Do you know what the triggers are? Finding them and avoiding certain foods helped me immensely. If you're not sure, what did you last eat and drink in the past day or two?

I've never known anyone with Gout that was not overweight. See a doctor, make a plan and stick to it. once the pain is undercontrol , get off your butt and walk 2 miles a day, everyday, 7 days a week. get rid of the weight and you will get rid of th Gout. Good luck.

I know a few people that are not overweight & are rail thin & still suffer from Gout.

Ah, the old lead pill round the back of the barn. Will a Webley .455 suffice? :old:

Yea, gout isn't just an overweight person's problem.
Hopefully you like cherries Nathan. Not marachinno (sp?) cherries, the fresh ones with the pit inside. Regular eating of them will decrease your flare ups significantly.
My father has gout (and is overweight) but my secretary has it too and she is not really overweight at all. The latter claims that only giving birth comes close to the pain of gout. Having seen my father suffer I believe it. This is a man who sat through an entire dinner with 3rd degree burns on his ankle and didn't even complain about it. (He'd had an accident on the way to the dinner and ruined a bunch of their napkins by bleeding all over them from wounds on his arms, we never knew about his ankle until he went to the emergency the next day, complaining that his ankle was "a bit sore".)

third degree burns are not painfull, the nerves have been destroyed that generate the pain message to the brain, so no pain. it's the surrounding second and first degree burns that generate the pain. Or to be more correct, full thinkness burns generate no pain messages. partial thinkness burns are very painful. Third degree = Full thinkness burn

It's not related to weight. You happened to know overweight people that had it.

Yeah, I took a chance and had a few beers while watching the SEC championship. The only source of caffine I now enjoy is coffee and luckily the coffee been has some of the same effects as cheeries. I am currently out of colchicine and indomethicin. Usually if I have an attack its ina toe and I can tough it out however theis atack is big and is in the ankle joint so I cant walk or drive at all. Currently waiting for soemone to give me a ride since there is no way I can drive my car which is a manual. Its odd for a woman to have gout . I've read that fewer than 3% of the female population world wide has gout.

Forgot to say Nathan.....I have a good friend that suffers from gout....not fun watching him go thru what he does when it flares up......I hope you get it under control and feel better soon.....I didnt mean to make light of your suffering in my last post :salute

Sorry Hammy, it sucks. Drink more water bro, like a gallon a day if not two (the yellower your piss, the more lactic acid (?) in your system, the more lactic acid (?) the more gout you'll have).
Edit: Uric acid, ty Blooz!
I know a few people that are not overweight & are rail thin & still suffer from Gout.
As do I, they both drink enough soda to piss corn syrup.

Gout is caused by high uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is the byproduct of metabilized animal fats and shellfish. Uric acid crystalizes on the tendons and ligaments of the extremities (feet, hands, ankles, wrists) because the blood cools there. The crystals (which look like broken glass under a microscope) inflame the tissues causing incredible pain.
I and my father used to suffer. Doctors have several uric acid reducing meds to prescribe these days. He uses Uloric. I use Allopurinol.
Get to a doctor and get your blood uric acid checked. You don't have to suffer!

Jebus...always one. Cum 'ere and I'll hold a hot muffler on your ankle until the skin chars. Then you can tell me how much it doesn't hurt.

While I'm thinking about it, don't rely on ibuprofen and the like for pain relief. I pounded down over ten years so much Tylenol, Advil and Aleve trying to kill the pain of gout my liver has really taken a beating.
Get to a doctor! They can help you!

Smart advice for anybody in any chronic pain. Taking it for long periods of time destroys the liver.
He has meds though, but is out of them. Colchicine does wonders.
For me, I can no longer eat shrimp or mussels, which sucks, because I really enjoyed them. However, it takes as little as 3 shrimp to set off an attack. I found out that deli ham (Boar's Head) does the same thing.

I found out the hard way beans are also bad for gout as are fatty fish I've been nailed before by shirmp also biggesty culperate is deffinatly soda and I have struggled with that. I'll go on a coke bing now and then and pay for it. As for the cherries I have a really thick concentrate cherry juice I mix with water. I eneded up driving my self to the dr(murder on the ankle) and of course only parking space was around the corner down a hill. Looking forward to a good sleep tonight. Lunchmeats are rough on gout but you can maybe get away with low sodium ham(the ingles stuff aint bad) Luckily I have a desk job now so I dont have to hobble around pulling orders in a warehouse as I once did.

I had it for the first time this summer. I noticed a lot of other people limping around the same time. I wonder if it is some darn food additive/increase.
I would recommend drinking more water. I think this may have been my problem because I was drinking more softdrinks and less water than usual. Water is the first thing your body needs to reduce the crystal buildup in your joints.

I got it the first time after finishing about 6 weeks of intervenous antibiotics. Mine usually flares up 2 days after some sort of impact to my toe or foot. Like jumping off something high or stubbing one of my big toes. I'm allergic to Allopurinol, found that out the hard way.
If I take 2 aleve right when I first notice a slight bit of pain, I'm usually fine within 12 hours. I will usually take 1 every 12 hours for a couple days after that. If I wait 4 hours before taking aleve, I'm screwed and have to go through that awful pain for the next couple days. Sometimes that pain starts in the middle of the night while sleeping. That's when it usually gets me.
Drinking lots of water seems to help prevent a flareup.

Gout is a vampire it is always at its worse at night.

Sleeping is tough. I usually elevate my leg on 3 or 4 pillows when I have an attack.
Hope you get better soon.

The right diet really helps. Get rid of meat in your diet. Go to a plant based diet....newer studies have shown that purine from plants has no effect on gout.
I suffer from psorisis and diet is the only thing that has given me relief.
I recommend reading "the china study".

I know two folk with gout that are both very fit. Mother is one of them. It's not a fat thing.
At least it provides a great excuse to eat a bowl full of dark cherries each night.
