Title: Smoke screens from PT boats
Post by: TopGear on December 20, 2012, 12:42:31 PM
Weapons of WWII is on and they are showing the pt boats and ordnance loadouts. They were capable of producing a heavy smoke screen.  In game it would be neat to shroud the cv from bombers with it and even shore battery fire.  Mind you that would be a lot of smoke to cover an entire cv and it would also restrict the ship gunners view.  Thoughts?

smoke causes some people to have lower fps so there would be a box to enable/disable it.  if it is an option then those with bombers would just disable it.

Yes, the smoke generators were meant to screen the PT boats as they withdrew.  Most medium to small naval combatants either had smoke generators or could at will increase the amount of smoke coming from their stacks.  They were defensive in nature. It would be cool (though the FPS issue probably makes it impractical in the game) if the CVTG commander could order the DE escorts to generate smoke, to shield the TG from shore batteries or enemy naval gunfire.  Just turn the fleet away from the threat and order smoke.  It wouldn't be as helpful to shield from attaching A/C, but could gain you some time against an enemy fleet.

We have smoke for tanks, and we occasionally have low fog on the shore (which I think is a pretty cool effect).  We could have something similar for PT boats.  Something that would obscure without killing the graphics.
