Everyone of the tops kills was in a B29. Not one was a fighter. Be cool to do an unescorted run sometime.

Ahem.. cough..
Let's not look at WHAT they killed, shall we..
:(

I have to agree with FiLtH on this.
I planned the 3rd frame and I read the logs of who was getting the kills in frame 1 and 2 and the B-29's were racking them up at a much higher rate than the fighters. Not to say the fighters were valuable, but you had to use the fighters as a sweep ahead to break up larger defensive fighter formations which would then force the IJAF fighters to come in piecemeal to the B-29's.
I'd like to see a "Snapshot event" using this scenario and setup with adjustments for mostly all ALLIED bombers with just a few ALLIED fighters for escort duty going up against a good number of IJAF fighters. If the Snapshot went well than it should be considered for a future FSO scenario.
Also as a change this setup could easily be adapted to a European Theater setup with 8th AF units using the B-29's against the best Germany fighters of 45'. Or as a "What If Scenario" say late 45' or early 46' with more jets, 152's etc.
Either way i know the 325th VFG would be in on a setup like this regardless of the side we were placed on.

I only speak for VF-17 when I say this, but the reason we didnt score very many kills is that our job was to protect the bombers or clear airspace. We never really got the opportunity to chase down and kill the enemy. We could push them down, but then we would be out of position to protect the bombers. While the B-29 is so fast the Japanese got one head on pass, and then it turned into a tail chase, which is bad enough against B-17/24s

This, x10.
The Devil Dogs had a 16k hard deck, and we could only catch back up to the bombers when they made their turn back home. First frame we had some fighters get low and decimated, but the next two I think we only lost 1 fighter total. We lost one B-29 to a head on attack in Frame 3.
The first frame, over Hiroshima, when the ~30 IJAAF/IJN fighters came screaming out of the sun... that's one of the best FSO moments I have had... :salute

that is the same reason we didn't in the frames we flew fighters. force em down, if you're me, compress, get lost, then waste a ton of fuel getting back to the friendlies, and altitude......then try like hell to get home before frame end. :bolt:

Not to mention that we did inflict moderate to severe damage on many enemy planes, but given their proximity to home, they were able to get home and land.
