So lately I was listening to music as always and I stumbled upon something very strange. It was a video of a guy doing the gallon of milk in an hour challenge and in the suggestions I saw this. -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DULdEgVgY8&list=FLrE3CA5Rw_rspKARI-5JuzQ&index=3
Turns out it was a half-decent Progressive/Black metal band. I like the stuff but I don't really know where I should start looking for this kind of music. If anyone knows about some of these bands i'll gladly compensate you with an internet cookie for your time.
No joke. Internet cookies are up for grabs here.
Seriously guys.
I'm serious right now.
Omg guys.
Seriously.
Internet cookie.

Must've heard these guys. Been around a long time.

Good stuff, yet Iv'e never heard of them. I wouldn't consider that progressive/black metal but it sure is good.

Interesting. I think the mix of clean/dirty vocals was a nice part of the song along with adding a female vocalist. Very rarely does that happen in metal. Overall the song was good, video was slightly strange.

Dimmu Borgir is definitely strange...
If you like female vocalists and more mainstream metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa5BUDKgzRQ

Agalloch is pretty big in the American black metal scene, I think it may have something like what you're going for. It's not super proggy but it's definitely not as lo fi as a lot of black metal is
I'm not really into black metal (I mean I don't seek it out like I do other kinds of music) but it's one of the few strands of metal I really enjoy when I do listen to it.

If you're into the dirty/clean vocals, you may dig this... The band is "Straight Line Stitch". I've seen them live, and this chick will rock your face off.

Awesome! I nominate this for the "best thread since the Mayan Apocalypse" award.

That worked, much better than the white page with silence I had before :lol I like it.

That's some good stuff. Black metal definitely is a very enjoyable genre of music. Its a shame that most people overlook it. Its not the "hail Satan, do meth" stuff that people make it out to be. Oh well, nothing can ever be perfect.

Wasn't expecting Jamey in that. Total blast to the face with a shotgun. Good sound and that's a nice mix with the vocals.

That is quite the nomination. I think we all deserve a medal or something up in here.
Also, I found a good band myself. Has a mix of clean/dirty vocals and the music doesn't sound forced or too overbearing.

And a good band with a female vocalist. I'm sure most of you have heard of this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwTv45OW5Yw

Kick bellybutton lady right there!
If you thought that was good, you gotta check out some of their other songs. Maria Brink is one hell of a lady.
I know that I wouldn't mind meeting her.

I can honestly say this isn't a genre I listen a lot if any at all. About the only ones I've listened to and could enjoy was Bathory (and now Agolloch, thanks Motherland).
Bathory - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyYnstGB3rM
and here is a nice little gem on the subject http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-nTrB0gkGk :P

I have to say that I liked Bathory a bit more than Lich King. Back in the 80's/90's when the whole black metal/progressive metal was getting started it was definitely a lot different. However we all need our foundation to get going. Still it's good music and i'd rather take that over the mainstream horse crap on the radio these days.

Found another good band, and its probably some of the best iv'e heard so far.

I'm on a huge Epica kick lately. I've never liked any music with the "death metal growls". But I've made an exception for this band. They are just awesome. Oh and the lead singer is pretty hot, and she can sing well enough to win a talent show on Fox imo.

If you like that, then click the related links for full videos. That video has the best audio though.
Here's another live performance, worse audio quality but includes the whole song:

Do progressive black people even play metal?
Just sayin'.

If that was a joke, then it was kinda funny.
But if not, then I have no idea why you said that.

That's pretty good. It sounds more like a symphony metal type of band though. I found another good metal band with a female vocalist. Not really black metal but its good.

I'm not personally into the whole "evil noodle of satan" thing :devil, but form a metal music point of view, there are some interesting things going on.

Unfortunately audio quality isn't the best on these older youtube vids, but the music video is one of the most awesome metal vids ever.

There's also blackened shoegaze/blackgaze
It's pretty cool, though most of it is heavier on the shoegaze than the black metal.
I mean I'm more into shoegaze so that makes sense to me.
