Title: M35 Deuce and a half
Post by: TheMercinary60 on December 30, 2012, 09:53:14 PM
just curious if anyone has one and what they think of them, im thinking about investing in one and just looking for general opinions on them

also i heard a rumor about them being able to run off used motor oil. any truth to that?

If they can, I guarantee it can't be good for the engine.

actually i found a forum with a page that talks eclusivly about alternative fuels for them... it seeems that alot of people run them strictly with waste motor oil and quite a few more run it with just a bit of gas or disesel fuel mixed in

Used to see these monsters almost daily growing up (Mom and Dad both in the Army, mechanics) along with Abrams' and more, got to ride in both as well  :O

Very cool, brings back memories, I say you get one and post pics  :x

IIRC they were anything but comfortable to ride in though  :lol  :aok

I used to drive a deuce in the Army - fun. (mid 1960's) It had the multi-fuel engine, but never used anything other than diesel fuel. They said they would run on anything that would combust -whiskey, etc. Later on, in civilian life, I had a 1952 GMC (strictly gas) deuce I would use in my firewood business.  I could pretty much carry anything, anywhere. This one had an automatic transmission that I had to change once - not a hard job but challenging because of the weight of the thing. I really enjoyed having it and driving it around empty as well - used to take it to the bar now and then. Thanks for the memories.

If you have a use for one, get one.

We had a M35 that was refurbed with a new Cat engine and the auto inflate system on it like the HUMVEE. Got to play with it in here snow one day down here which was rather fun. We actually ended up taking it back and getting a M939 5 ton which was much easier to drive. Power steering, what a concept.

When I lived in NH the local fire department had one made into a brush unit, the only thing is the guy who knew how to drive it, kept getting it stuck.  :headscratch:Trying to figure out how a low geared unit like the deuce could get stuck.

Deuce's are great,,, if you know anything about them!!! these are highly modified versions,, but with stock engines and running gear  and no,, they didn't build an extended cab or a 4 door version for the army!!!
most of the people I know  chop down the frame and remove the back axle

the "Whistler" Engine,,  D turbo white LDT 465 multi fuel is the most desirable, mine was a 1969 , they will run on veg, oil or motor oil or any number of other things,, but like Diesel the best,,, or a blend pretty heavy on Diesel
here is a take with the engine noise you want!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ht9UHUOc-c
here's a clip of a chopped deuce going down the highway with late model 5 ton tires on it and the originals on the back!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dJDRnNQ_MY
one of the reasons someone might keep getting stuck in it, would be that some of the older transfer cases only worked in one direction at a time,,, lock it into forward 4x4 and it is out of 4x4 in reverse,,, a weird thing I know,,  and fixable with a kit!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the one I have now is actually a WW2 era deuce,  that started out just like this one
(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg229/WWhiskey/mvg_www_deuce_ww2_700_zpsbed8e8bd.jpg)

and a picture of it now minus the rear axle but with  a 572 BBC instead of the original hurricane six

im curious, why do you like the single axle? personally i enjoy them they way they came, for some reason i just cant find one of the bobbed ones attractive

Unless you need to hual a heavy load it is unnecessary in my opinion,,, but, everyone has their on idea of what they want,,,   Of course. Less stuff to fix, less tires to deal with and in most cases,, a more nimble truck without the third axle,,,, and if you are not hauling a heavy load,,   More ground pressure per tire with only two axles,,,,

the ones we have on the ranch are still 6x6's we hual hay with them ,,, they work fine and I wouldn't change them up.

Was just curious if the axles were changed or if there is a new CTIS that works with solid axles as I would love to put this on my Wrangler.

I already have on-board air  :rock        http://s239.beta.photobucket.com/user/tymekeepyr/library/Jeep/OBA%20Install (http://s239.beta.photobucket.com/user/tymekeepyr/library/Jeep/OBA%20Install)

I always thought that the CTIS couldn't be installed with solid axles (which my Wrangler has, also)

I don't know of any reason why it wouldn't work,,, our 5 ton has it,( solid axles), I am pretty sure I've seen late model M-35s with it as well last time i was at the depot in Colorado
I would love to know why it supposedly wouldn't work?

On topic about the fuel - my unit was in the field doing some cross training for a few days and we came across this
(ignore the flipped over vehicle in the background...  :uhoh  :bolt: )

And I looked and sure enough (I immediately thought of this thread...I think I may have a problem.)

Ii was the duece driving instructor for my unit for a while,, schooled a few women on how to drive them,, M.A.N. card,,LOL.  That's cool,,,some of you old soldiers will understand,, I once got an AAM for getting no deficiencies on a road side spot check by the fort Gordon MP's in my duece,, my reward was,, I was made duece driving instructor,,,a very cushy job to say the least. I also became the chow teams driver while we were in the field ,, which meant I went to rear everyday for a nice hot shower,, ate all my meals hot, and slept in the back of my duece in " the lap of luxury". Being awakened by the cooks just in time for hot chow for breakfast ,,then another trip back to the rear, another hot shower, and a nap!

I should be more specific to say that without portal axles, or major mods to my hubs, it is not something that is cost-effective for the average Joe to do.  It has been a topic of discussion on the Wrangler forums for quite some time.
