Title: A dogfight from my perspective
Post by: Latrobe on January 03, 2013, 02:26:20 PM
I thought this would be a neat video idea to show what a fight looks like from the other guys perspective (or my perspective to be exact  :D ).

Here's a 12 minute long 2v1 fight I had in the MA last night. Recorded with Fraps and TrackIR so everything you see if exactly what I saw during the fight. Turn on Annotations to see what I was thinking during the fight as well.  ;) Or, leave them off and enjoy the fight.

Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62rGxgCAVvU

I really enjoyed especially since I wasn't a victim in the tube.

Just one tactical tip for you. After you downed the Yak the first time, you know he will come straight back for you. At an opportune moment you could have moved well away from the field and denied them the use of the Ack to solve their ACM problems. The ultra timid C.2 would have certainly tagged along under the psychological comfort of outnumbering you. Then you could have killed them both with plenty of space to work in.  :salute

I was thinking off that, but I was down to 25% fuel. Would have had only 5 minutes of fuel to fight with had I done that. I knew I wasn't getting home, so might as well enjoy the fight.  :)

Fun to watch :)

The tracking you can do with TrackIR is incredible when compared to a hat switch.

Might have to git me one of them as my hat switch is starting to act up. Good an excuse as any.

Nice vid Latrobe. :aok

Nice Latrobe...I like comments.   :aok

The timidity of some folks never ceases to amaze me.  It can't possibly be an ego boost to be forced to run to ack after each pass vs just being shot down.  They would have been far better of being aggressive...or if just one of them had been aggressive.  If they die they at least learn something aside from which direction friendly ack lies.

I think about this every day I play. This video is a good example. I made several mistakes throughout the fight, one of which finally led to my death. As I sat in the tower (and watched the film later) I recognized these mistakes, learned what to do to not make them again, and that will eventually lead to me improving beyond my current skill level. So my death in this film actually improved my piloting skills.  :airplane:

Exactly.  Everytime I die I try to figure out what I did to cause it and learn from it.  You can see some of that process in your comments...esp the ones referring to close calls or near death because of "xxx".

Even in seemingly unwinnable situations or very tough situations I can find ways to improve or at least identify the mistake I made that caused the fight to end with me going down or at least not taking some of them with me.  Sometimes it's as simple as SA (didn't pay attention to other red guys showing up to the fight) or misjudging how long it would take for the new red guy to get to me.  Other times it's just missing one or two chances to put rounds into one of the red guys and losing out on dropping the odds.

Whatever the case I can always find something or things that I can do to make a difference and improve my chances next time.  My loss is always my fault.  This of course doesn't mean I will ever not die much as I am very innovative in finding new and exciting ways to whack my cartoon plane   :D

Actually if the guys you were fighting would look at that film they could learn ALOT.  I always have a harder time in multi-con engagements if even just ONE of them will be aggressive.  It sort of traps my SA on that guy vs. the other guy allowing the other guy to have a much better chance at knocking me down.  Of course the risk for that one guy being aggressive is that he may get popped.

Great flying, SA and comments  :aok

That c2 sucked pretty bad. I have a bet that name is 8 letters long, begins with a k and ends with an i.

My thoughts exactly. It was almost sad to watch someone so dweebish and cowardly acting. Sad.

Unfortunately, you're right.... it's far too common.

Very nice.

I too suck at gunnery, but your SA makes me feel like a baby deer.  Thanks for giving me an idea of how I'm supposed to be doing it.

+1

Nice and clean from the Yak, rarely fought Latrobe but he is always the epitome of fairness and fearsome skill. Almost out turning a Hurri in a Jug a few time, never ho's and is always courteous. Every other time I have met him he has killed me with apparent lack of effort.

Great film  :salute

Great film! You sure know how to make that 109 dance  :rock I didn't know they could hang on the prop so well either. I wish I had your SA, keeping track of multiple cons is very difficult for me.

Nice video!

I love watching a dogfight from a very good pilot's POV, in my opinion it's one of the best ways to better yourself.
