Title: 3d HFR and the Hobbit
Post by: Grayeagle on January 06, 2013, 10:18:32 AM
Took my son to see the Hobbit in 3d HFR.

For those who don't know, 3d HFR is a digital filming process that boosts the frame rate ..a LOT.
The effect is a substantial improvement in any scene that involves the camera panning across ..
..no artifacting, tearing, flickering, blurring .. it adds to the suspension of disbelief.
You *are* there.

Immersive is such a huge understatement.
It felt like I was sittin in front of a huge window watching the action right outside.

To the point where my son and I both reacted to a scene
where Thorin Oakenshield comes into camera from close right
and Eric and I both wondered who the moron was who was cuttin across our view ..
..o..wait ..nm ..he's in the MOVIE!

..and that was just one of the many very cool moments throughout.

Worth every penny of the 50 cents extra per ticket at our theater :)

Just amazing.
I am rooned for life now .. cant wait to see Jack the Giant Slayer in 3dHFR.

Yep, it was sharp and natural, I liked it much. I've seen articles where they say they needed some time To get used To it but at least my wife and me didnt have any trouble. Great improvement to movies really!  :aok

Honestly, I don't like it. I turn off that very feature on my TV at home, maybe I just need to get used to it or something but it's just a bit unsettling to me.

The problem with it on your TV is that what you are watching hasn't been filmed in the high frames per second giving it a fake look.

I HATE tv's with this feature, makes everything seem so fake to the point of unsettling my stomach  :(

Keep TVs away from this discussion, it is not the same thing.  :aok   Keep in mind that 3D and HFR are also two different things.

As a 3D freak i have to watch in 3D HFR.
But i'm afraid of this so called "Soap Opera Effect", i turned it off on my 3D TV,
Movies looking like shot with a cheap Videocamera.
This effect looks great when camera is moving very fast, though.
