Title: 835 NAS Sea Hurricane
Post by: Greebo on January 07, 2013, 08:29:54 AM
835 NAS was based aboard the escort carrier HMS Nairana and was used to protect convoys against air attack and surfaced U boats. This squadron's Sea Hurricanes had their upper surfaces painted white to be less visible against the usual Atlantic overcast. On 26th May 1944 this aircraft flown by Sub Lt Burgham and another flown by Sub Lt Mearns shot down a pair of four engined Ju 290s that were shadowing their convoy in the Bay of Biscay. These were the last ever air to air kills made by a Hurricane.

The real aircraft was a Sea Hurricane Mk IIC but this is an acceptable substitution on our Mk IC. The only external differences are a longer nose and spinner and a slightly bigger radiator.

Very nice.  Also quite distinctive for a British paint job.

That is beautiful, but now I have a dilemma, I used to use the night fighter skin exclusively (all black or dark blue), but I think I like this one better!

Can't wait to have it available Greebo!

I'm currently finishing a Soviet Hurri IID, after that I will do an all-black IIC.

Nice Greebo, but why did they paint them white?

White was considered the best colour for aircraft hunting U boats in the usually cloudy Atlantic. RAF Coastal Command Wellingtons, Liberators, Catalinas and Sunderlands were often painted white underneath, also some USN and USAAF aircraft in the Atlantic too. Even at night a U boat's first sight of an attacking aircraft was its dark silhouette against the clouds and painting them white reduced this.

The RN's carrier-borne aircraft were not generally painted in this scheme however. 835 NAS painted their aircraft white while at sea protecting a convoy and without permission from anyone ashore.

There are photos of these white painted aircraft both with and without the stripes. I wanted to show this aircraft as it was on 26th May when it shot down the Ju 290 and I assumed D Day stripes wouldn't have been painted on until June 5th.
