NYC isn't just a city, it's like being in a completely different country no one else is used to. The boroughs each have their own pace and mind set. Staten Island stinks a lot in the summer from the land fill. I used to live in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn. No matter what though the myths are all true. The halloween parade in Washington Square Park beats any spectacle you could watch except Times Square on new years eve. The subways have a lot of different sports like dodging muggers, listening to drunks sing, or watching the graffitti go by out the window as you go over the bridges. It's the kind of place where you grow a situational awareness and can still stop and get a hot dog on the corner as you go look at land marks. That guy sounds better than most i've heard on the subway. You watch everyone walk around looking at the ground usually to give each other their privacy because of there being so many people. When the streets are empty in some parts in the early morning hours it's kind of wierd. "If I can make it there i can make it anywhere" is completely true. Most big cities have the same sentiment, in NY it's a lifestyle though.

Actually I find each city has its own flavour. My tops
San Fran
Montreal
London
However, I've never really been to NY. Flew out of Newark once, saw the Twin Towers in the distance.

Land fill has been gone for years now...I actually live about 5 miles away from it, no smell that I've smelled since I've been living here (10 years ish). Hell, they built a mall right near the fill and its now a park.

In the city, that would be true. Though there are some decent 2 family houses that goes for 500K-700K on Staten Island. Nowhere near Cali or TX, but not outrageous prices either. Although Staten Island is filled with Albanians, Italians, Koreans for the most part.

you can buy about 4 or 5 houses where I live in some decent neighborhoods. not sure why you dont think that 400k to 700k is not an outrageous price. oh well maybe in the next life I will get a richer gf.

That is your reason?
I go into the city quite often with my school being 30 min train ride into the city. That by far is not the worst reasons to not be in the city lol. A subway ride at 3 in the morning will get you much much more interesting things to see sadly. Ranging from drunk people peeing in the subway, tranny hookers, seen people filming skits (this one was by far the most interesting, think they said it was for school but it was very interesting to watch), etc.

Because some buildings are still allowed to use bunker oil for heating?
That would be my reason.

Because the median price for a home in NY last year was 1,000,000.
The cost of renting some apartments or condos in Manhattan can run up to $11,000/ft2

LOL, I just finally switched from fuel oil to natural gas last month. :D Wasn't quite bunker oil, but close enough.
