I noticed that the default controls in the game were a bit odd when I re-installed the game from full download (I had some odd bug where vehicles were stuck in 1st gear for some reason, and a full re-download and re-install took care of the issue). The defaults for the joystick seemed to have different setups. I'm so used to this old setup that I don't get why it isn't the default.
You see, I am constantly switching back and forth between Global Mode-1 and Global Mode-2 to get more controls on my joystick coolie hat.
I started with online flight sims back in the Warbirds-1 days, before they even had 3D card enabled graphics. Pyro and HiTech might be the only one else to remember those days, but it was about 15 years ago. They've had this feature ever since those days, and I am so used to it that I cannot play the game any other way. It was the default setup at the time.
I have my hat switch on the joystick that lets me look in the four directions everyone knows. Up, back, left, and right. However, I have one of the thumb buttons on the stick to go use Global Mode-2. In that mode the stick setup is nearly the same as Global Mode-1, but just with the hat switches all set to up forward, up back, up left, and up right, and the button that was set to mode-2 is now go to mode-1. Thus, you can loop back and forth between the two stick configs at will, which I do constantly, which effectively doubles the use of the joystick hat switch.
When I re-installed the game I had to setup all of those hat switch directions for my stick, and it made me wonder how many people are playing AH-2 and don't even know you can even setup your controls that way. Maybe I'm wrong, but am I?
The thing about the Aces High that beats all other flight sims for me isn't the flying or the online play (those help), for me it really is that simple control option that I sorely miss in all other flight sims. I end up feeling like they're not as good because none of them can do that, and I don't get why nobody else does that in their games. It really does work so well that I think AH-2 is the easiest game to get Situation Awareness in because I can look around like I want to so easily.
P.S. Don't forget to setup your rudder pedals for both stick modes as well. I had problems with my toe brakes for a bit until I checked and saw that only Global Mode 1 had the brakes mapped to the pedals. If I landed while in Mode 2 mode, there were no brakes.

you'll find surprising how many people remember these day in here
I leave mode 2 for gv special controls, and use mode 3 just to have secondary fire on the trigger
-
If you set the modes to auto select then use mode 2 for thing like tanks. Then set up mode 3 or 4 to do what you want to do. Not sure if you saw the copy button but will copy mode one and put it in the other modes. Be careful of selecting default in another mode it will default all modes.
In mode two look under the vehicle to set joy joystick for specific functions just for vehicles.
Hope that helps.

I use all four modes. Mode 1 for fighters and attack, Mode 2 for GV's, Mode 3 for bombers, Mode 4 for Field guns. The reason I use Mode 4 for field guns, is I have it scaled to a little bit slower response. Doesn't work very well, I still can't hit crap with them. :D

I use the AH modes so I can easily switch my trigger between gun banks (using the X52 thumbwheel):
mode 1: all guns
mode 3: primary
mode 4: secondary
mode 2: GVs (with really extreme axis scaling to help with gunnery)

Odd bug of vehicles not coming out of first gear can be a sign your rudder axis needs calibration.
1- planes
2- vehicles
3- CM Eye

this happens to me every now and then. just move the joystick to fix it.

Judging from the replies I think it might be true that only an old school Warbirder like me uses the stick modes to double the usage of their hat switch.
Like I said, I toggle back and forth between mode 1 and mode 2 constantly while in combat, just to make my hat angle upwards 45 degrees in mode 2, but act normal in mode 1. It makes using the hat to look around so easy that I don't think I would bother with a Track-IR. It wouldn't really add that much.
That was how the default controls were setup in Warbirds. Hell, I was going to call them "stick set 1" and "stick set 2" for a while, but then realized they are not called those anymore.

well considering that most sticks have themselves several modes, my guess is that the majority of players only use 2 modes.
my pos fighterstick can have over 100 different mappable keys. plus about another 20 or so on my x52 throttle plus another 16 on my custom box. almost forgot my pedals have 6 additional besides the ruder. so in other words way too many to remember.

Seeing as Aces High has a multi button push set-up it is easy enough to get all the views with out switching modes. I have all CH products , so I have LOTS of buttons. I have my 8-way hat on my stick set up as the views, then I have two buttons on my throttle set-up as look up, and look down. With these 10 buttons I get 26 views. Hold the up and the left and I get Look up/left and so on. Never have to change modes, just have to remember which is up and which is down.

I use a CH Pro Stick, which has the 8 way coolie hat, trigger, three thumb buttons, and a throttle wheel. I also use CH Pro Pedals, which have both push and tilt to each pedal (rudder and toe brakes in other words).
I actually do NOT use a throttle stick at all. The throttle wheel on my stick is good enough.
The highly customizeable controls of AH pretty much means I don't need anything more than that. They get the job done with no problems.

Hat views? How quaint and 20th century :devil

I use 4 modes. 2 for airplanes. 2 for GVs.

I have my TrackIR5 sitting in a draw at the moment.

I think Track IR has it's uses, but it doesn't look that fun to me. I would much rather have Oculus Rift support in AH-2, although you would need to have a virtual cockpit with working switches as well, since you can't use your keyboard while wearing the thing.

I use the keyboard for all my viewing needs. The only real down side is that I cannot talk smack on channel 200 while looking around and vice versa.
