Title: 87 Squadron RAF Hurricane Mk IIC
Post by: Greebo on January 16, 2013, 09:31:58 AM
This is the Hurricane Mk IIC of Squadron Leader Dennis Smallwood, CO of 87 Squadron RAF in early 1941. It is painted entirely black, the RAF's night fighter camouflage of the time. The legend on the art below the cockpit reads "United Provinces Cawnpore 1". Cawnpore is a town in India.

Smallwood flew during the Battle of Britain with 249 squadron, was then given command of 87 Squadron and later earned the DFC and DSO. After the war he became a staff officer, rising through the ranks to command RAF Strike Command before retiring in 1976.

That there is going to be the only skin I use on a land-based Hurri, awesome work Greebo!

That looks pretty well done and all. but it totally negates my earlier version of LK-A, which was for the Hurr IIA. Since they'd be on the same airframe, just with different guns packages, I guess I won't be updating that particular skin. Oh well, it was bound to happen whenever the Hurricanes were updated with new versions.

Sorry Krusty, but I gave it a month after the AH Hurris came out for anyone else to state an intention to skin a Hurri and no one did. I was originally looking at skinning Kuttelwascher's JX-E for the black Hurri but could find no useful WW2 photo of it. LK-A had a nice aerial colour photo taken of it, so that was the obvious choice.

LK-A was Sqn Ldr Ian Gleed's Mk I during the BoB. This originally had the dark earth/green and sky scheme but with a red nose and this aircraft was later painted black for night operations. The much later Mk IIC I've skinned was itself repainted in a grey/green with black undersides scheme. Any of those three have good info available and would make a good scheme for a skin.

Oh, I *could* skin another one, but it would be redundant. You see, the last time it was one for the hurr2c, one for the hurr1a (mine, really a IIa, but weapons didn't fit making it a IIc skin).

Not really upset, just disappointed I don't get to claim that one for m'self.

Too busy with other skins to do hurr ones at the moment, and nope I didn't call dibs on any, so it's all good and no hard feelings.

Maybe a black Russian to sooth the pain?

Damn you! You are such a tease! I may just have to pencil that into my "to-do" list!
