He tried to stick the tail wheel too soon / with too much speed...shoulda made a three point landing and that would not happen.

If he was trying for a tail low wheel landing he seemed to have gotten a bit sloppy and let the tail drop.  If going for the 3-point he wasn't quite there.  Correct response for a bounce like that is hold the pitch attitude and use power to cushion the 2nd landing OR go around and try again.  A go around is NEVER as embarrassing as breaking the airplane.

When he touched down the tail dropped increasing the AOA which ballooned the Mustang back into the air.  He then lowered the nose (bad thing to do) which planted the airplane hard the second time and he probably tried to "pin it" with forward stick to keep it on the ground which really picked the tail up (sounded like he may have had a prop strike).  From there on he was a VIP  (Very Interested Passenger)

That has to be one expensive non wreck. So besides replacing the prop I'm guessing they'll have to go through the engine and gear box, and maybe repair a wingtip. Any guesses as to how much that's going to cost?

colmbo I thought I heard him strike the prop on the runway too.

Well at least the air frame wasn't destroyed.

And THIS is why our pilots stress to NEVER try and make the (difficult and dangerous flare for a) three point with the mustang at our museum, go for the faster and safer two-point, and the brign the tail down.

Lucky.  Almost payed for showing off for the camera.

They did do a great job restoring 73079 though.

Yeah, he missed the opportunity to save it after the high flare.  Could have pulled power and committed to a three point vs trying to pin the mains.
