Got a 93 gmc 2500 truck 4x4. Was wondering what brand of spark plugs wires and a cap i should get. I need to improve the gasmilage how ever i can. But wasnt sure they made a brand of parts just gor that.

I really don't think the brand names make that much of a difference unless you start getting into the performance ignition stuff like MSD. They say a MSD ignition system will improve gas mileage, but I added a lot of other performance stuff at the same time and went from 10 mpg to 5 mpg.
Believe it or not, most of the caps/rotors and wire sets you get at the parts stores are made in the same place...Mexico. They're just packaged in a different box. So any tuneup you do will improve fuel economy over what you had before the tuneup.
edit: don't forget a good air filter. I've yet to find one better then K&N :aok

For a GM I'd probably stick with Delco. Although some other brands are probably just as good.

Alight well thanks guys was just wondering. Bought the truck this last summer and its been in and out of storage from thst tine. Due too the third gear being out. Im now driving it as a daily driver, but am getting less less then ten miles to the gallon in her in town. I know the truck is well overdew for a tune up. But just wanted to make sure they didnt make different stuff for fuel economy. Thanks ben.

A '93 3/4 ton truck is going to burn more fuel then you'll like, no matter what you do. It's the nature of the beast I'm afraid. Keeping those tires properly inflated will do wonders. Also I'm wondering what gear ratio you're running. I low geared truck will suck the fuel like there's no tomorrow. Something to think about. If you're not pulling a trailer and just going to and from work, you might want to consider some higher gears. :old:

Yea i have a very low geard truck. Atm i dont plane on towing
What would it cost for a diff gear

This.

yeah its a 2500, gas mileage sucks :lol I have a 2003 2500 HD and I get about that in town driving and about 13 on highway. But I have enough power to pull anything I want or need to. as for tuneup, I run delco plugs as thats what I believe in running in gm and I just buy house brand caps and rotors.

Just depends on where you go. A junk yard..probably a couple hundred. But a lot of times you can find a old donor truck sitting out in a field and get one for a little of nothing. You might want to find someone to do a little trading too. Some guys would rather have the low gears.

Ok thanks uptown

Stock replacement, all AC Delco, you can go to their website and look up the part numbers online, and a good Advance Auto Parts will be able to order what they do not have.
You can go MSD for everything ignition except the spark plugs, and see a very slight increase in fuel economy. It'll take a long time to pay for it in savings though.
Set the timing to 8-10 degrees advanced.
Switch to a good quality 10W30 synthetic oil (use a K&N or Wix filter).
I get longer life and a little better performance/economy from the AC Delco Rapidfire plugs.
Don't forget the fuel filter, and the PCV valve.
If it has not been replaced recently, a new AC Delco oxygen sensor will probably help.
Free flowing exhaust will help fuel economy, if you don't use the extra power and enjoy the better sound.
Switching rear end gears will require changing the speed sensor buffer to correct the speedometer, and prevent possibly setting codes in the computer. You have to switch both differentials out to match with a 4x4, or you'll kill the transfer case. It's a lot of work on the front of that truck.
Synthetic gear oil in the differentials will help (in the transmission, too, if it is a stick shift).
A proper alignment will help. As well as the previously mentioned proper inflation.
It's the little things that add up.

If it's just a commuter/daily driver, I'd say you'd be money ahead to sell it, and buy a small fuel efficient car. Rather than pour money in the form of fuel AND parts into what will always be a gas hog.
What engine do you have? If it's the 350 then 10 mpg in town sounds about right. If it's the 4.3 V6 then it should be better, maybe around 14-15...

Ya well i like my trucks lol i go camping alot of the times so ill be keeping the truck. I use to have a older dodge truck. But ut got totled this summer and got this one. But thanks for all the advise guys. Ill try sone of thosr things out when i get the money saved up.

acdelco rapid fire plugs will run nicely in that engine. they're a bit pricey, but worth the money. cap/rotor/wires, go with napa's stuff. you left out the engine size.........
-
350 sorry
-
350 sorry
definitely rapid fire plugs. either napa or acdelco for cap/rotor/wires. new upstream o2 sensor. fuel and air filters. if you're port fuel injected, run what's called a motorvac injector cleaning. most shops charge about 100-150 for that, but it is well worth it. if you can't afford that, toss a bottle of techron in a full tank of gas.
-
That will almost certainly be a TBI engine. A can of SeaFoam every so often should help the injectors. Try to find gasoline with no ethanol if you can. The ethanol, either 10% or 15%, has 1/2 the energy of gasoline, meaning 10% ethanol costs you 5% fuel economy, and 15% ethanol costs you 7.5% fuel economy. Ethanol also kills the older injectors and fuel systems. If you can't get ethanol free gasoline, then Lucas Oil makes an additive that seems to work well.
By the way, the actual percentage of ethanol varies wildly. I've seen 10% ethanol gasoline actually have as much as 22% ethanol. It doesn't really blend worth a damn.

That truck new only got 11-14 mpg city. What do you really expect to raise it up to?

Im just trying to get what ever i can out of ut. I know we drove this trucj from rock springs up here to twin falls idaho. And only used two gas tanks worth three years ago.i went and filled it up there other day and made a trip out to burly idaho and used half a tank for the full trip. Im just trying to get the best gas milage out of this truck as i can.
-
not to sound like an arse, but it is a 3/4ton pickup the mileage is what it is, I drive the same truck just newer and it sucks to fill up, but thats the price you pay to drive big toys. If I was trying to get better mpg I would sell it and get a 1/2 ton which gets way better mileage. That said dont take it the wrong way, I see what you want, but it aint gonna happen. Have you thought about getting rid of it and getting a smaller truck? I had a 1990 gmc z71 1500 and got 20 mpg on highway and about 15-18 city, I spent more keeping it full of oil than gas :rofl

You do. The guy said he was keeping the truck. Does it offend you that he is interested in doing the best he can with what he has?
A 1/2 ton weighs about 500 pounds less, at most. Same aerodynamics. Just less gear, weaker powertrain, and sometimes less power. Not a lot better mileage. Usually about 2MPG, maybe 4, at best. Hardly worth a trade, especially if he has to pony up much difference.

I actually owned a half ton tryck had a 85 dodge ram with the slant six three speed. Got wondrrfull milage was a good work truck, except it sucked for horse power couldnt get her up a single big hill with out going 30 up a 50 mph road. This last summer i got it a car accident truck was a lose l. Insurancr gave me 1500 to get a different rig so at the time this was the best deal i could find. This truck is alot better then the half ton i had. Like i said im keeping it for noe. Was just tryinh to figute out what steps i could do to improve the gas milagr. Tha.ks every one for responding ill give all the idras a shot.
