Title: Need a new router
Post by: Delirium on January 21, 2013, 08:33:13 PM
I need a new router, does anyone have any good (or bad) experiences?  I'm looking for one with reliability and range, regardless of price.

Thanks in advance!   (I did a search on these forums but it is only showing topics 8+ years old)

I have tried a few, but I like the Linksys. I use a Linksys/Cisco WRT610N. My mother-in -law uses my wireless, next door and has no trouble  with it. I'm running 4 wired, 4 wireless computers, and 3 gaming systems through it with out issue. Granted They aren't all running at once , but we have had 6 computers and 1 game system running at the same time with out any trouble.

I'm still using an old Linksys that I installed about 8 years ago.  It's outdated at this point but still keeps working.  I've got two computers and a printer wired to it and a laptop wirelessly connected at the other end of the house.  Often they are all on.  It picks up signals from four or five other houses in my neighborhood but eveyone's using encryption.

I got a NETGEAR N600 DGND3700 a year or so ago. My PC is connected to it through an ethernet cable, but a pad and phones use the wireless. Range is OK, there is a good signal anywhere upstairs where the router is, but a it is a bit patchy downstairs. The signal is generally good enough downstairs for a Skype call but you have to avoid a few dead areas. I may get a signal booster for it sometime.

I've always had good luck with the 3Com "Officeconnect" series of wireless routers.   YMMV

Same unit here......spotty upstairs, ok downstairs. I think my issues are more due to the construction of my home, than the router though. Decent unit, ok for the ipads but had to run an ethernet cable to my sons ps3 due to lag issues.

I've had good luck with the Cisco e4200.  They've come way down in price as well.  You could probably find one for about $100.
