Title: To Zoom or not to Zoom? Making the Shot.
Post by: Randy1 on January 24, 2013, 07:37:30 AM
I have started to diddle with using the zoom toggle and different Zoom levels to make a shot in air to air work.  Is the zoom toggle a common tool of the shot making trade?

Last night I think I made some good shots with zoom but then I plowed my P47M into the ground one time because I had zoom on trying to make a shot.

I have yet to try it on air to ground attacks but seeing a tank might be easier.

Zoom when the target is 600 away or more. I make a habit of not staying in zoom longer than 2 seconds. After you zoom, quick pan around the cockpit to regain your SA again. A quick pan takes 1-2 seconds, super useful in furballs.

I used to use zoom all the time before I got my TrackIR, Now I just move my head closer to the screen.

While zoom made everything look bigger I found after I got my trackIR that it was more problems for me than it was helpful. Often when I zoomed in It would throw my targeting off because it would feel like my stick was more sensitive while maneuvering for a shot. I also felt like i had a harder time seeing where my shots were going while making deflection shots.

This is just my thoughts about it though.

I only use zoom in tail chases. You have some bozo just running away, I'll zoom in to try a drop a few rounds on him to see if he'll turn. The rest of the time I stay in my "home" view out the front for my shots.

I don't zoom other than to pick out GV's or to get a better viz on a low running plane hiding in the treetops.

I use a slight zoom on every shot (i still can see the ammo counter on my 190)
My hit percentage was 15-18% before i went absolutely tarded.

zoom on long shots.

Anything inside 600 yards... nope.

I use a slight zoom (bit less than half the max) for nearly every shot, and I also use zoom to look at potential targets to anticipate their trajectory better. My zoom toggle button is very accessible and I use it a lot. I have an analog control to change the view angle on my throttle. My hits% is usually above 12% in the p51d.

I only zoom in to shoot on tail chases.  For me, it messes up my timing on deflection shots if I'm zoomed in.

I do use zoom quite often if I have a bandit in front of me and I'm trying to see what he's doing on my way in.

Zoom only for long range views of targets or bogies, never use it for firing.  Destroys your SA and distorts distances, closure speeds, etc.

I only use it to see what's going on at farther than normal vis range. I never use it for firing as imo if you're zooming in to get hits you're probably too far away to be firing at all (other than a long 6 plink). And as others have said--it ruins your SA as your field of view is now tiny in comparison to normal view.

I just wish there was a way to configure a zoom setting other than the default one, which for me, for most purposes, is too much. I'll hit zoom and then zoom it out to my liking. Something like half the default zoom. After that it'll stay at that range the rest of the that session of the game. It's not like a head position that can be saved with F10.

I used to watch Zoom when I was a kid, its how I learned to speak Ubbi Dubbi :huh. No in all seriousness I'm a zoomer, formatted to throttle  so its  easy to use. Click to zoom, scroll wheel to toggle in and out.

From the replies, I had the zoom over zoomed.  When it worked last night, I thought it did give me a better shot at that single moment.  I put the zoom toggle as a switch on the rudder pedal after reading i think Fugitives reply on setting up pedals.  That took a bit of practice to keep the zoom off while using the toe brakes.

I will give it a go tonight with less zoom and try different turn off and turn on points.  i do think zooming will help my shot making skills if I don't over do the zoom.

As always I appreciate the replies.  Good stuff.  I have several options now to try.
