Okie Dokie, been thinking about this for awhile now so here it goes...
I see quite often no matter what side, players will take off in bombers, not to bomb anything... but rather to be a target and get kills because they are good at it. I was thinking, of an episode of Dogfights titled "Long Odds" showing different situations where pilots had slim chance of survival and made it out on top.
This one.. is of Olds 666.
http://www.youtube.com/watchv=w4cksG7JoE8 *Start at 2:20 for Old's part*.
Looking at Aces High, I see that there are "production" planes and tanks in the game. But what about singular *iconic* ones? 1st plane that comes to mind is the Red Baron.
I understand there was only one of these because it was an icon of them, they created it. But I was just wondering if that is "enough" to make it unable to be added to the game? Or any "Iconic" plane for that matter.
Of course it would be perked.. not expensive but affordable; since it is a "Gunship". No formation, it was singular. I believe in the last part of the video the narrator speaks of them "Hitting their target" so possibly a payload? Not sure. But I don't see why planes like this can't be added into the game, Take a B17 chop the payload (or cut it entirely if it didn't have any) then add the extra guns to and change the weight to the equivalent of the lowest payout of the current b17 or slightly higher (for the weight of extra guns/ammo).
In words it's simple and in theory (to me) it's possible to add to Aces High.
What are your opinions? Do you see any "reason" of not being able to add *Iconic* planes to the game? If so, what are they?
Just a thought of adding new content and -in a way- honoring those that served by "showing off" their planes. :airplane:
Respectively,

Well the B-17 gunship was a real plane, and a few tens of them were ordered by the USAAF. Check out the YB-40! They were used as bomber escorts, but once the heavies had dropped their payloads, the gunships were too heavy to keep up.

ya know... if ya want to have some fun take up the Me410 with the six 20mm's. More ammo than you know what to do with, much easier to use than the 30mm's (flatter shooing and higher velocity), and volley that leaves the plane does over 21 points of HE damage. Nothing survives a hit. You NEED to have fighter cover though for the Me412 pretty much handles like a bomber when loaded with guns and fuel. :aok

'Old 666' wasn't a gunship, it was a normal B-17E in which the crew added some extra guns so they could strafe when they did low level runs.

Could be used as a gunship though

ackack did you watch the dogfights video??? there were at like 28k to begin with and had something like 7 zeros on them and there were doing recon
no strafing to be talked about

I've seen the TV show and I also know the history behind Old 666. Yes, the extra guns were put in place so they could strafe when they did their low altitude bombing and anti-shipping missions. Read the pilot's account of strafing Japanese AA at an airfield with his forward firing .50s that was mounted for the pilot. As for the famous mission with the Zekes, just because it was flying a patrol mission (USAAF B-17s and B-24s were widely used as patrol planes) doesn't make it a gunship nor it's primary role.

Interesting to note how Zeros could make multiple head-on passes on a B-17. Either those were some leet Zeros or B-17s didn't normally travel at 290mph and 30k, like in AH. :)

In the pacific they had the jet stream which played hell with the bombers at high lt

Old 666's reconnaissance mission had the bomber at 25,000 feet when it was attacked by Japanese fighters. Once Old 666's oxygen tanks were damaged, it had to descend to below 10,000 feet.
