I know that a few years ago (quite a few years ago actually... I was still a squeaker...) HTC aired a few commercials which is how I found out about AH. I'm sure that it is not in the current budget for HTC to air some more commercials right now since it probably runs somewhere around $500,000 (complete ballpark estimate), but there are other ways to generate publicity for reasonable costs.
A good point would be around where I live. Every July there is an event hosted at a local RC airfield called Warbirds over Delaware. This year the event takes place July 10th- 14th I bring this up because I thought that it would be a great chance for HTC to generate some publicity since everyone there shows up to either fly model warbirds or watch them be flown.
I also know that there is another event in the Midwest called Warbirds over the Rockies, but I have never been to this event, and know nothing of it.
It would also be a chance for HTC to walk around and get some ideas for planes to add to the game. Every once in a while someone will show up with a bird that no one else knows about.
And for anyone else that reads this thread, if you happen to be near the Lums Pond/ Newark area, feel free to stop by and check it out. The pilots love to be asked questions about their models, and some of them really get into the event.

Or just get some internet sensation to play the game for 30 seconds. Boom instant 500,000 people registered.

And then the server will crash over-and-over from being too many people... "Can just imagine the frame-rate dump near busy airfields"

This is true. :D

Or just Youtube it and title Gangham Style Nude. That would get enough hits.
You may not get the participants you want, but it would work.
-
It would be the same crowd we've already got Three.

This is true. :D
No, it's not.

Never understood why AH does not throw the game onto a CD with the two weeks free play then distribute them in the gifts shop at museums like Planes of Fame in Chino, CA or the Palm Springs Air Museum. WWII enthusiasts are right there by the thousands every year. Even that other online WWII sim got smart and advertised in the Historical Aviation Catalog.
-
HTC has always said they wanted to stay "small". The split main arenas came about because the population got to high for one. It had nothing to do with "technical" issues, but social issues. HTC believed that too many people made it harder to build the community. If your one of 1000 people on your team it is easy to feel left out, while if your one of 200, not so much.
Maybe they are happy where they are. They make enough money to keep everyone happy while still doing the one thing they all seem to love, building the best flight Sim GAME out there. Not everyone needs more, MORE, MORE!

I recall otherwise Fugi. Back when the LW MA's were split, Hitech said something to the effect..."I'd rather have 10 LWA's with a 300 population max vs. 1 LWA with a 3,000 population max."
-
It's pretty standard for online games to have multiple instances with the same world and entirely different people.
It'd be awesome to see more people playing Aces, but it'd be weird to have different worlds.
-
To the OP:
HTC still advertises on TV almost the exact same amount as we always have.

ABSOLUTLY NOT TRUE, Small as in number of employes. not Small as in size of player base.

The written word can be taken many different ways. In this case I understood it differently than intended.

I was at a friends house the other day and he just had basic cable. I like the military channel but some can live without it. Those that have regular basic cable would never see an ad placed there. How bout the Discovery or the History channels?

The issue is that they have not been running the types of shows that show a return on the investment. When history channel was running dog fights, we used them quite often.

So there lies the solution: You gotta produce your own TV show. Heck, just go a step further and create an international TV station, broadcasting in all countries by cable & satellite. Shows and documentaries about WW2 aircombat 24/7, hire some big TV personality names to host them... maybe even creating a movie franchise.
And then you have a place to run your TV ads for Aces High.
It's really that simple. So little investment for such huge return.... :old:

What about some UFC fighters?
Disclaimer: I know nothing about the cost of advertising with them. :)
-
History channel in Canada has been running a show called Air aces, would seem to be an appropiate program to advertise on. Also discovery has Mayday and Mighty planes, while these arent WW2 based they are about aircraft.

and what does UFC fighters have to do with WWII aircraft? People who enjoy UFC don't necessarily enjoy WWII aircraft. On the other hand people who are into radio control airplanes "might" be, so that would be a better place to advertise.

The History Channel is nothing but "Pawn Stars" TV. :headscratch:
Declining world economy, Iran's nuclear threat, and swarms of locusts... bah. Kid stuff compared to the scourge that is reality TV. :furious

A booth at a major air show with 4 machines logged into the arena and a big screen connected to one would bring in a lot of subscriptions.

What do any of the Super Bowl commercials have to do with football?
The goal of any advertising is to reach people. Millions watch UFC events nearly every weekend.
Find the minimum expense for the most exposure...which means reaching more people however possible.

I like this idea. In fact, the first taste I had of an online flight simulator was at a computer show a very long time ago, where they were showing off different types of games.

My comment was based off of what Hitech said, see the quote below...

So the history channel is no longer targeting the people Hitech feels will give him a good return on his investment. Much like, I'm thinking UFC fighters would either.

Thanks I'll look into the Air Aces, It sounds like it would be a good match.

Not nearly enough. ;)
But seriously, the lower number of active pilots (compared to like 4 years ago) may not impact that much at US prime time, particularly after AH went back to the single LW arena format. But at US offpeak times it can get as low as 50 players online, which is quite dreadful on a large map.

Tell those Euro's to move to a decent country with timezones that make sense. :old:
Tell those 'mericans who play during work hours to get a job. :old:
Tell those retirees to go work with wood or play some bridge till the working folk get home. :old:

air aces is a very good show, it goes into the details of particular "aces". and their not all American. no offence meant. I think anyone willing to spend the time watching air aces would be a god bet on becoming a member.

You want to help Aces High out at little expense to yourself?
Get on Facebook, add Aces High, and share the page. share updates as they are posted, etc...
If everyone did that, it'd reach a hundred thousand people in the first share alone.

Problem with that is, if half of the stupid people I'm friends with on Facebook played this game, I'd quit.

I've actually been trying to get a hold of a few youtubers who play these sorts of games a lot. No offense Vudu, but they have a lot more subscribers (as in a few hundred more subscribers). Most of their audience will end up playing a game they do because they want to fly with them, which I'm hoping could be a selling point. If anyone wants to help out though, feel free to send them a message with a link back to the HTC home page, that's what I've been doing.
And just so I don't feel like crap for speaking poorly of you Vudu, I've gone ahead and subscribed to you. :rock

Why not just do a simple cross-link partnerships with other sites (like Century of Flight, Warbird Depot, Military Factory, World War II Database or any of thousands of others) that cater to the same people. No money has to exchange hands and the sites can monopolize on the increased traffic monitarily by whatever means is appropriate to their business model. I know I've never seen links like this on the AH website (other than player postings) but I'd consider it a service if they were interesting to me.
Back in the day when I was in charge of marketing for a commercial website I did this all the time with reasonable success. The ROI was good considering the time it took to to vette the sites and write a contract but most of the contract was boilerplate.
Guerilla marketing would also be a cheap, high ROI model. Send a cheap givaway (a button, patch, CD, etc.) to all the airshows and air museums. People love free stuff. What airshow promoter isn't going to accept a "value add" to give away to ticket buyers? And many of those people's interest will be peaked enough to check out the website as long as they have a reminder in their hands.
Yes, there's a little effort involved but very little cost. I used to hire interns or entry level marketers to execute on these things.
Of course you probably also want to maintain a targeted ad campaign as well as a coordinated publicity (sorely lacking for HTC from what I've seen) campaign to fully capitalize.
I've seen HT say he doesn't have faith in traditional marketers. I think he may have simply had a bad experience with an inexperienced (or substantially overqualified) individual.

How about if we had some HTC approved hand out at air shows? Are there shirts available for order?
-

I think "HTC approved" may be too broad of a term. If we use that as our standard, I could get away with handing out a picture of a sheep with some booze bottles scattered around and the website plastered at the bottom.
-

I'd be interested to take/order/trade for a somewhat fashionable 2XLT.

I'd suggest getting the Professional Russian on YouTube to plug AH in one of his videos.
Maybe offer to send him a free subscription, perk points, stick and pedals or something. With 3.8 Million subscribers and 552 Million video views I think it would stir up some interest.
