First background, I'm a cashier... I hate it... it sucks... :bhead
Now to the story, today I ordered quarters for my register since I was completely out. When they finally arrived I found a gold quarter mixed in... yes... gold. I don't know yet if it is real gold but it is a real quarter. Naturally, I like the old and the rare so I swapped it out for a quarter in my pocket to keep. I seriously doubt it's made of gold, but it looks like it has either been discolored by some chemical (would be one nasty chemical IMO), or it has been gold plated for some reason. :headscratch:
Anyone ever hear of something like this before?

Pictures. Need them. :old:
-
I'll try, it's hard to get a nice clear picture with a 5 year old camera on something so small.
-
You sure it's not a Susan B. Anthony dollar coin?
-
Nope, it's an Alabama state "QUARTER DOLLAR"

Better check for a CSA stamp on it.

I have a 1954 silver certificate dollar I found in a stack of ones before from the bank

It's very common to find Silver in the coins at banks. Never found gold. When cashing my checks will ask to get some half dollar coins and go though them. Sometimes you get lucky and find some silver. :aok

Found this pic.

Sounds to me that it might be a gold plated quarter, I couldn't find anything indicating gold quarters were ever minted.
What year was the quarter minted?

Something is telling me it was minted in 2003.

You might be right about that.
Provided 'Dragon Tamer' has the same type of quarter that 'Old Sport' posted a photo of... :salute

I once raised 4000 FIM from a cash machine. They gave 50,- notes. When I counted the money afterwards I found out that I had 450 too much and mixed in the 50 notes was a 500 bill. Stuff happens even at the banks!
-
Old sport nailed it, it looks exactly like the quarter I have. Great news that he found it though, my pics didn't turn out anyway.
For clarification, yes it is a 2003 quarter minted in Denver.

Did a google search on 2003 Alabama gold quarter and came up with this:

I'll bet a bikini wearin' chick who does the gold plating on emblems for car dealerships once owned that quarter.

All the more reason to keep it! :aok
As for noTch's post, it has all the proper markings and the edge is notched not smooth. Nice find though.

Science teachers buying snack foods with sudent's electroplating-project turn-ins.... nope. :devil

My guess is it was part of a commemorative set sold on TV and some kid raided it.
-
Speaking of quarters, a buddy of mine just sold 10$ worth of Silver Quarters (Pre 1964 I think) for about 300 bucks in silver weight. From what I understand, silver quarters go for like 5$ a pop

1964 was the last year.

Here is an interesting possibility according to the Wall Street Journal. They might do away with the penny and nickle altogether. In the case of the nickel, simply redefine it as worth $0.10. until it can be pulled from circulation.
Apparantly there is an investor in Dallas that has stockpile about a million of them just in case.
