And I am..... okay with that. I make that confession at the risk of stepping on some toes of some in the game that I have come to admire and respect.
I suppose a little background info would help explain this admission. In my pre AH virtual life in the skies of Fighter Ace my squad participated in KOTS (kings of the sky.. a squad vs squad event) every weekend for several years running and did very well for ourselves during that time. If the Aces of the Rising Sun guys heard me say this phrase once they heard it a thousand times... "you're either dragging or you're clearing".
After years of getting my jollys turnfighting my butt off in FFA, (Free For All... the DA lake on steroids, complete with air spawns, unlimited ammo and fuel and relaxed physics.) I expanded my horizons and took on the challenge of leading a squad into battle. Needless to say, the path to success in squad on squad competition is paved by clearing 6's as quickly as possible.
With literally close to a decade of that mindset in my background I still get lots of satisfaction out of clearing a green guy's 6... before the red guy gets him preferably. I still get lots of satisfaction from the appreciation shown by the green guy who might have been a complete stranger to me at the time. I, for the most part try to respect obvious 1 on 1's in the MA, and almost always ask if the green guy wants help.... if I fail to do so its normally a case of needing to make a split second judgment call where big picture thinking (ratio of green to red) influences my decision or I just know the greenie won't have time to answer before he dies. I will say this, thus far the appreciative greenies far outweigh the irate ones..... for my "assistance"...... sorry Dolby, I still feel bad about that one.
Apparently my "MO" is going to inevitably clash with the "MO" of others in this game whom I respect, as has happened a couple of times in recent nights. I enjoy the white-knuckle, hand shaking 1 on 1 as much as anyone but I have come to realize that in the melee that is the MA.... those uninterrupted 1 on 1's are to be savored not only for their enjoyment .... but for their rarity as well. Most 1 on 1's I enter into in the MA, I expect to be interrupted. Sad but reality.
For the record I would like to separate myself from some of the more notorious "timid" pickers in these ways... what I normally fly couldn't outrun 75% of the bad guys around me, and, unlike them, I WILL DA ya in a skinny minute. May not win, but love the fight and the learning experience a DA session provides.
Do I fit YOUR definition of a "picker"?

Yeah you do but so does everyone else. Everyone has picked at some point.
The only time I think it is lame is if you pick a 1v1 that is far from any other combat.

I wubs you Nish, nose picking and all.

I honestly can't remember what that is in relation to.
Whatever it was I was probably just venting, appologies :salute

Pick Dolby's nose, film it, post it and say it was FlyinFin's finger. We WILL believe because he'll read this and then do it anyway.
(Dolby, stay away from FlyinFin)

"you're either dragging or you're clearing".
Great quote Nish :aok

I've read that some 90% of all kills in WW2 were of planes that did not know they were about to get hit. Maybe that is high but I remember reading it and in any case, I'm sure a massive number of dead planes were a result of not being aware of the bad guy.
As for dragging or clearing, I like it. I spent a year or so with Loose Deuce. Great squad, great leader, great ethos. In a squad fight you have those that dive in, and those that save their butt. I enjoy climbing into a good fight though what I found is I enjoy tailing around someone and clearing their six.
It is just as difficult a task. You've got to watch your own '6', be aware of what your flight leader is doing, stay aware of all potential threats, always position yourself properly to be of use when it is needed, avoid the temptation of easy kills, then when you see a threat positioning to hit your lead, you have to time it perfect to get him before he gets your squaddie.
To do it right is a challenge. And as many tandems in the real world will note, you get just as many kills. And the better you are the more aggressive the lead can be know you bail him out, over and over and over and over...a few of those guys still owe me beers.
All I can say is :salute

If I had to create a thread each time I was called a picker I would have been banned years ago :P

don't sweat it Nish,
Just think Rambo 3 when they see the hordes of Russian's coming to block them from the border. Re-load.

If I see a green guy below me with a red crawling up his apple like a chigger, I am going to try to knock the red off. A picker to me is someone that does that exclusively avoiding any other kind of fight.

i used to really hate gettin picked. now it depends on the situation. for instance, the other day the knights were vulching a base but werent even trying taking it, they were just there to pad their scores. so, i decided to come in over the top from another base. and i find 6 or 7 guys up high, they see me but most dont have the e to beat me, so of course they run to easier prey on the base. a 152 is 5-6 away but not enough alt for me, hes lurking. but one guy does have alt and does fight me, i get in behind him, we lose a few k alt, and i had no gun solution. a few seconds later theres the 152 and hes in, and gets a shot off, takes my wing. ok fair enough. i get back up and over there and im looking for that 190 and i see him, he sees me, he starts going away, i shadow but cant catch up to him. hes running, bc he cant wait till im engaged to get me, he has to do it himself now. but, sure enough i see 4-5 other planes and a jug, the jug makes for me, we go at it, the other planes have no real shot for a few seconds, but soon enough they do, and theyre in too. now im at risk of gettin covered up by multiple reds. and like clockwork heres Bush in the 152 and picks me. he had a 1v1 chance and ran from it, but as soon as i was engaged he all the sudden wants a fight. he just couldnt stand to see a good 4 on 1 matchup, he had to be the 5th. i called him a picker on 200. he said im whining. i told him, if youre not taking the frkn base how about fight or let a fight happen? no response. he didnt want a fight, he wanted kills, so he can look like a FPH. but seems to me you should earn that sht. in those situations i say the picker is scared to fight, so they pick for score. some chickens like that, hang out in the furball and only pick bc they have no cajones. to me, thats when picking is lame.

Everyone has picked. Period. No one should care. Everyone hates getting picked because you earned the kill on the guy that got saved.
Thread over

If I'm killing lots of stuff, and my meager skills seem to be working as best as I can apply them, I try not to pick. Oddly, getting picked on one of these nights has little effect on me. "Meh... no matter. I will simply up again and continue killing" says Triton.
But on those nights where I can't do anything right, my bullets never hit, and I can't so much as withstand a dirty look from a red guy, picking starts to make me rage. I start to wish real life misfortunes upon those who pick me. Not only that, but I begin to pick others like it's my job. "Screw it. I hate this game and everyone in it" says Triton. :uhoh It's usually those times where my wife walks into the room and tells me how stupid I am and if I wake the baby up she's going to be very mad. My reply is usually something like, "OMFG, you don't understand, ________ just picked me. That *$!@)$%&#*%&!"
In short, I am a petty, childish man with a warped sense of reality.

If everyone does it in game and it was the tactic successfully employed by American pilots to all but clear the Pacific skies of Japanese opposition.....
Why then is there this seemingly concerted effort to attach a negative connotation to the term and disparage the practice so?
Back in FA I was rather proud of my 6 clearing abilities to the point where my standard reply to squaddies when they'd thank me for saving their bacon was "it's my job, it's what I do" Here in AH I have seen more than a few savaged for it.
I think there is a consensus that 1 on 1's off to themselves should be left alone, but in the midst of and on the fringes of a furball ..... who's expectations are more realistic.... the picker or the picked? While I don't want to misinterpreted as encouraging timidity, I'm not altogether a fan of castigating those who dash another's unrealistic expectation. Make sense?

I always understood. The bottom line is this: 1/2 love the immersion and try to live like they were WWII pilots with something real to lose and others play it like its what it is...a game and the game is about aerial and mechanized combat where actually fighting reigns supreme. It will never be solved

Probably my only real gripe with the way people play is this. When there's a 1 v 1 going on, with nobody else around, and you're 5K+ away, just let it play out, unless your teammate asks for help. (Not you, Nishi, I mean the general population, but certain folks notiously do this.)
You killed me the other night in a 6 v 1, but it wasn't a pick. My own bad SA got me there. :) I did make a comment on Vox about a high 190 diving in to become the 6th plane as I was trying to run away from the first 5, but it wasn't you. :)
