My old computer after 6 years of faithful service finally gave up. I had to buy a new one. Great PC ASUS with i7 3770 cpu 16 megs memory
and an NVidia GT630 Vid card with 2 meg vid ram. Now....I got no instructions with the PC but it was a straight forward setup. I was expecting
at least a small booklet on Win8, but I got nothing. Took me two hours to find out how to shut the PC down through windows.
In control panel my devices are listed, CH USB Combat stick, USB Throttle, and USB Pedals all Ch. When I go to calibrate them in windows
I get no response. When I click on them separately in control panel it says device is working. Consequently when I go into AH offline
I can't calibrate them either. No action at all when I move a controller. Any thoughts?

First, I wouldn't admit it took that long to figure out. . . <cough>
Second, I think you need to install CH Control Manager first and get the devices recognized properly. Everything should work then. I will admit I have never touched Windows 8, so beyond that. . . you may have to wait on an early adopter like Ripley to show up.

This u should see having totaly no problems on W8 here

Thanks Chalenge. I'm familiar with XP...best windows ops ever but had to get this PC in a hurry.
Getting familiar with it though. Windows already has CH drivers USB included. Should not be this big of a task.
Windows8 I know only what I am discovering. Thanks Bug. I think I'll unplug them then add them again one at a time.
-
A lot is still on the same place in Windows should take a little week to get used. Having a i5 3550 with the same video device gt 630 Had 3X AMD before . This is a fast stable machine ..love it.

Bug glad to have you back. Thanks for the help.

Make sure you don't plug the controls into the blue usb ports.

Best to get a powered USB port for your CH sticks!
All the Best...

May have to wait until CH gets a win8 ver. of drivers and/or control manager.

Bug runs Win8 with CH stuff and has no trouble.
I'd uninstall the CH stuff and un plug all the controllers. I get a USB powered hub and install that...being sure NOT to plug it into a "blue" out-lined USB port. Then plug each of the controllers in one at a time and let them load in windows. Once they are all done goto game controllers to calibrate each of them. Load the game and calibrate each in the game, and then use the game mapping system to map all of your buttons.

ElFugitivo thanks.....they are all plugged into a powered USB Hub....and are recognized. Thank all of you for the help also.
There is something small that I am missing....something running that prohibits me from setting up my Ch stuff.
I started the whole system again from the beginning, re-set windows etc. After building at least 20 PCs on my own, installing operating systems and drivers
this has really got me scratching my head. I tried the Ch website. They have control manager and Ch drivers for Win7 not Win8.
Besides windows tells me the devices are working properly and I do not need drviers...ya.....right.
-
So you see them in the "device and printers" window right? Then if you right click on the game controller icon the top option should be "game controller settings". After clicking on that the next window should have the list of controllers with a status column. Do they all say "OK"? If so, click on one of the controller to highlight and then click on the "properties" button to open the "settings and test" window to check the controller. Can you get to this screen? Where does it fail?

Fugi....found the problem. It was with windows itself. I did everything I've done in the past and what you suggested. One of the selections was "troubleshoot."
When I selected that windows itself corrected a problem that it found while troubleshooting. I had to do that for all three devices.
they are now working properly. Win8 didn't explain what problem it found...but it corrected them <shrugz>

That is because Windows was embarrassed again and didn't want to admit "it" screwed up. :D
I'm glad you got it working!

It probably rolled back the win7 driver you installed to the native one ;)

Welp.....it WAS fixed. Fired up the PC again today....went to map controlers, same problem again in windows8 and in game.
Controllers won't respond at all. Windows 8 is the latest version of Vista.

Heya Hajo,
what you are describing seems so similar to what I would refer as the USB ports "Going to sleep" or "Suspending power to USB ports for inactivity or use"
Is there any way to track down and find the USB root hub or USB ports and right click on their properties and check them to be always powered on ? so Windows 8 OS does not drop them out to where you lose use or lose calibration of them?
so many people in the past from WinXP, Win2K, Vista, Win7, etc...... have had this particular problem, I am thinking you are now experiencing it in Windows 8, now
Hope This helps

Win8 has the same tools as Win7. Accessible by right mouse clicking the left lower corner of the screen.

Thanks TC and MrRipley. I selected system and the controlers were not listed under sound, video and game controlers. Under universal serial bus controlers it doesn't name my ch stuff either. It has however identified the 6 available ports on the powered hub. All six had selected to allow to power down the hubs when not in use. I disabled that option in all six cases. In Control Panel as I said before the three separate contolers are seperate and identified stating "the device is working properly. I'm wondering if my old system XP....had USB2, almost sure it did. This crate has USB 3. I also noticed I have 3 sound drivers LOL. Nvidia, Realtech and the Sennheiser USB headset I have connected. Methinks I best disable the invidia and realtech sound drivers eh? LOL
-
Update: TC and MrRipley thank you. Seems that corrected the problem. Win8 apparently was placing the USB ports to sleep.
MrRipley....when I purchased this PC there was not even a small pamplet on the use of win8. If it weren't for you pointing out where to go to be ables to disable to change the USB settings I would not have been able to disable the USB sleep mode. Sure I could get to control panel and what not but basically though trial and error I've found eventually what I needed. I've built PCs a long time, this is only the second off the shelf PC I've owned since I've been building them. Quite frankly I think ASUS couldve sent more documentation and even a win8 disc. They provided neither. Only thing in the box with the PC was a folded up diagram in pictures how to set up the PC and a single disk with the video driver. Quite frankly even an experienced user needs more then that. (Why in Cods name would anyone build a pc operating system that would shut down the USB ports without informing the user?)
This system has the power to run the game very well, ASUS a good reliable brand. Built many PCs using their motherboards, never a problem. But shipping a PC with only a diagram and a poster is irresponsible imho.
Thanks again TC and MrRipley....hopefully when I log on tomorrow my settings will still be there.

Heya Hajo,
it should be Control Panel>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus Controllers>USB Root Hub
when you click the + or little arrow beside "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" at the bottom to expand it, you should see all your USB Root Hub entries in device manager
right click each USB Root Hub and check the following tabs under properties:
Properties
General Tab : status: Device is working properly
Power Tab : Hub information: hub is self powered Total Power Available: 500mA per port
Advanced Tab : Hub information: Hub operating at full speed
Power Management Tab : USB Root Hub NOTE* make sure no boxes are checked, especially the one that says "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
as for what your external powered hub shows up as or reads, I can not help ya, I have never bothered to use those.....
Hope this helps, Bro...... Good Luck
edit: seems you posted while I was typing this

Update: Last night I mapped the fighter stick and all was well. Got up this AM...guess what? After disabling the power management last night and giving me my contolers back when I again went to devices and hardware....tadaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaa! You guessed it my controllers would not respond to anything in Win calibration. When I went to Aces High my map for the controller was gone and again no response at all from the controllers.
Back to square one.
NEXT!! C'mon microsoft! I can take it! SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESH

It may not be Microsofts fault but a driver problem. My ancient Sidewinder works flawlessly in Win8 plug and play. The fact that CH still doesn't provide Win8 drivers may be an indication of poor support on their behalf.
Edit: I did some research and this seems to be a widespread problem among users. There is some suspicion that minimizing windows will somehow conflict with the USB and cause it to disconnect. Some users problem has disappeared on its own (probably due to an update). Have you updated your Win8 to the latest patches?
Some users have had success by disabling Aero.
ou can turn off some of these visual features in Windows 8 by running the Control Panel then "System and Security"-->System-->System Properties-->Performance Options and then clicking the Visual Effects tab. Select the "Custom" radio button and turn everything off. That disables all the visual eye candy that was part of Aero in Windows 7 and is still present in Windows 8.

Finally solved the problem. I D'Loaded the latest version of control manager. The CH equipment works fine now. Even after shutting down and restarting the CH Products now work and the mapping stays.
You can not calibrate the controllers in Windows8, they must be calibrated in Control Manager. You do NOT have to use control manager to map your controllers. You can still do that in the game.
Again...if you try to calibrate your controllers in windows, you will get a msg. stating that you can only calibrate using the Ch Control Manager.

Glad there was a work-around available until Microsoft corrects the issue. Not crazy about the work-around, but it will have to do for now.

Yep good to see it works :)

So with us CH control manager do you still need a USB hub?

So with us CH control manager do you still need a USB hub?
Sax yes. Make sure it is a powered HUB.
And again gents, I appreciate the help each and every one of you expressed. Thank You.

I have seen where people have suggested to use a "External powered USB Hub" if you are using CH Product devices........
personally, I have never had to use one to get my CH Products to work properly......... I have always used ASUS Motherboards ( outside of 1 Abit, 2 GIGABYTE and 1 ESC MB in the past )
but ASUS has always seemed to work perfectly fine with my CH Products USB type Game Controllers
I have posted in the past about this....... regarding that certain MB Manufactuers have better built components verses others.....
even when I have used CH Control Manager , I never needed a ext. powered usb hub
YMMV
Glad Ya got your stuff working, Hajo, Sir!

Johnny thanks. I also always used ASUS Motherboards when building systems. Always rock solid and when you purchased one you got the complete package with it. No doubt this ASUS PC has an ASUS mobo....that's why I purchased this one. However this is the first ASUS Motherboard I've had using an intell CPU. The PC is great in game holding a stady 60 framerate in game with everything maxed. Now.....the sooner I stumble upon Win8 other features, how tos', wheres' it at etc. I'll be much happier. I still love XP. Win8 has to go a bit before it impresses me.

All the HTC personal systems are ASUS and the ones using CH gear had to have an externally powered USB hub in order to prevent the USB bus from random resets.
Even when the bus does not reset, there is a bug in the 64 bit version of Windows 7 which causes a flood of 'bus reset' messages when the power levels on the USB bus get too low.
It has nothing to do with the motherboards. It has everything to do with the USB bus controller chip and the maximum power it is supposed to deliver. It does not matter if it is Intel, AMD, Via, NVidia or any other chipset as none of them well deliver the maximum amount of power specified for the USB bus.
Personally, I will never use any of the high end sticks from any manufacturer without an externally powered USB hub. They are cheap insurance. The longer you draw the maximum amount of power through a USB chip, the more likely you will damage it. It is the nature of analog devices.
