My monitor freezes up after about 5 minutes and locks up. the only way to restart is to hold down the start button. The monitor shuts down and the power light goes from green to orange; and everything freezes up. I have to push the start button to get out of it.
Also as I write this the teh resoulution on my computer has gone "higher" than1024 x 768.
The first game dialog box says my resoultion is 1024 x 768.
my computer is an XPS400 that I upgraded to 4GB RAM and a 650 Power supply

The first thing I'd do is to try with another monitor. Even a CRT tube monitor will do for just testing if it's the monitor or the computer.
If it appears to be the monitor that's faulty the culprit may be its power supply. It's a very common problem with aging tft (flat) monitors. Repair shops might not be too eager to replace their caps, but a trained electrician in the neighbourhood/family can do it with ease.
