Title: Port guns
Post by: Tank-Ace on March 06, 2013, 11:21:45 PM
So, I was playing MoH: European Assault, and it struck me that the harbor guns in the opening missions resemble '88s. Just got me thinking, would it be very difficult to put a pair of '88s on the end of the far right and far left docks?

My thinking was that it would help deal with some of the CV issues. While not as good as more shore batts, it would be an improvement on using M4s or M3s as stopgap artillery. The damage output is much higher, zoom is better, trajectory is already randomized.

Would help curb bringing the CV in to stupid-close ranges.

Additionally, it would improve field of fire out to sea, which is the most likely direction for aircraft to come from. And they could be used to fire on PT boats and LVTs that get a bit too frisky.

Oh, also some manable 37mms at the end of the docks as well. Just so we have some close in fire as well.

1. - It's a Port.
2. - Ports get attacked by water and air.
3. - Ports had manned ack covering ocean attack avenues as well as air.
4. - Ports are better able to defend against GV assaults becasue they are funny looking wussy VBases that spawn a task force with a manned ack blind side to the water blocked by buildings. Very rarely is the CV home to act as a flack barge for it's own port. VBases have better self defence capabilities unless the ease of capture is the point to the strange positioning of manned guns.

LVT and PT drivers won't be happy. Would be easier to return fire on those maps some ideots decided Ports on water don't need shore batteries making them a CV bum rush cake walk. Never understood once we got the 17lb and 88 why shore batteries and the piers didn't get at least an 88 mounted on or next to them to defend from jabo, tanks and surface craft. Even 37mm on the piers when the port was first updated. Heck introduce the 5"\51 for Port defence and airfeild shore defence with it's 16,000yd range. They worked well at Wake.

I like that game. :aok

Is there any historical evidence of either of these guns being used in these roles though?

Look up the history of the 5"\51.

88s shot at everything. If they were at a port under attack by raiding PTs, they would have fired at them with HE, AP, or AA rounds if they were out of the other two.

Literally not doing this for reasons of historical targets would be like making the gunfire from a 109 bounce of a Ki-84 just because they never fought in real life.
