Title: Pickup Missions
Post by: shoresroad on March 07, 2013, 06:32:02 AM
Is there a country that tends to run more pickup missions than the others.  Pickup missions are my favorite thing to do...nothing like a good plan  :)

Depends a lot on the times you are on. Each country has a couple of hord... err mission builders.  :)

I suggest you do a tour of all three countries for a week each

Build it (well) and they will come.  I often hear "Why doesn't someone make a mission". That someone can be you.  :aok

If you decide to do this know that you will be labeled a spy and most likely will never get a check6 again. :frown: Its been my expierience that most flyers expect you to join a country and STAY there without further exploration. I understand Bishop is the default country when you join so most stay there and they do like to run alot of missions.

In all seriousness, it really depends on time of day. Region plays into whos on and when.
If you build it, I will join.

Beat me in pointing this critical fact out, dot.  One of the reasons I won't fly missions now unless it's a AK squad mission...  At least then i know who to yell at if the plan is fubar.  :lol

But you will never experience a lack of players willing to clear your 12!

:airplane: You can join the "Rooks" country, go to vox 171, the "Devil Dogs" run missions each night beginning around 6:30PM EST every day! We don't horde, but we do run presion type base capture missions.

There was a time when you could plan an actual mission.   Have different flights leave from different fields at different times and fly different routs and altitudes.  You could do all this with one planning tool that AH provided.  To accomplish the same thing today is not possible.  For what ever reason the mission planning tool was dumbed down and is less of a tool for planning.
I think the problem with mission planning today is that of getting people to Join.  I’ve planned and posted a lot of missions and found myself the only person flying in the mission.  Also with today’s tool, it’s not possible to plan any sort of complex mission profile.
Also, the community no longer appears to be capable of thinking in terms of strategy, air superiority or post capture defense.   The horde rules,  I can’t explain the dismay I feel when after working  to secure a base capture only to see the nme retake the base in a few minutes as the capturing horde moved on to the next field with no thought of protecting what they just captured.
I think the mind set of todays player is just different.  They are not country or team oriented  and while many join a squad, they seldom fly as part of any organized game play.

Thanks for the information everybody!

That's too bad, Traveler.  Just plain combat is inherent in strategy, air superiority and post capture defense, so I don't see how they would be mutually exclusive.  I don't know why HTC would have dumbed down the mission planning tool.  For those that just want to "Turn and Burn" I would think they could do it from any field at any time without regard to what's happening on the map.  And I have seen hordes decimate Pickup missions, so they add to the fun!

Anyway, I've only been playing for a couple of months and really enjoy the Pickup missions the most.  Fighting with a purpose, whether in a bomber or fighter (or tank), is just more fun for me than blowing things up without a plan!  But to each his own  :)

Thanks for letting me know your schedule Earl.  I can't get online until about 7-8pm CST weekdays, so I'm missing most of your missions during the week.  But on the weekends I have caught them several times and they are really fun!  Now that I know your schedule I'll try to join in more often on the weekends  :)

As I get more experience I'll start planning Pickup missions myself, but right now I still don't know enough about the game to pull them off properly.  But learning as fast as I can!

That's not true.  It's random-ish, I think.  Either way, my "default" country was Rook.  I didn't switch sides, just logged in for the 1st time and BAM, Rook. :)

most of them are the same exact plan.

I actually considered joining a mission yesterday, which i had not done in years..  so I open up the mission window and what do i see...

8 sets of lancs
8 heavy p51d's
2 c47's

yeah... no thanks.

some people used to do fun and different things with missions.. c202 fighter sweeps.. stuka / sbd raids. etc. I've not noticed anyone doing that recently.

Yeah.  It bites that no one hardly do those anymore.  Damned if I can get one together.  I have a FAR easier chance and accomplish a LOT more herding cats while pissing into the wind.

I don't remember the last time I saw a mission with waypoints, multiple roles, feints, etc. Pretty much 99% are as described by Kvo75

"being organized" = having a single giant amorphous blob swallowing bases while the enemy is busy elsewhere  :old:

The last three missions I planned were an all Spit IX fighter sweep, JU87's escorted by 109E-4's and F-4's and FM2's, F6F's and F4U's off a carrier.

Sadly I only post about one mission a year but I never have trouble getting people to join.

Rooks and Bishops run good missions, and starting soon they will be doing monthly huge missions of the month. Think of a pick up mission with more than 50 people who join, seen one with over 100 a few years back.

horde
[hawrd, hohrd]  noun, verb, hord·ed, hord·ing.

noun
1.
a large group, multitude, number, etc.; a mass or crowd

2.
a tribe or troop of Asian nomads.

3.
any nomadic group.

4.
a moving pack or swarm of animals:

5.
to use more than 2 players to capture a base in aces high

sorry no matter how you sugar coat it, if it looks like a horde, smells like a horde, flies like a horde...its a horde  :rofl

Odd... the AK's rotate every month to a different country every month.  Never had this problem you speak of.

Each country has their generals, but like was already said it's time dependent.
