Title: New sound test
Post by: Pyro on March 13, 2013, 02:32:53 PM
We're doing another sound test.  This one will be a test of updated Miles drivers.  This download will install into your Aces High folder as a separate executable file.  If you have any issues with it, you can go back to running the normal release version.  It's the same setup as the FMOD tests we ran earlier but it is a different file name and will install a different shortcut on your desktop.  Please note that music is disabled in this test version.  We are looking for any stability or sound issues with this test version.  Thanks for your help, here is the link.

Ran it for about an hour in the TA with voluble vox, no problems.

I may actualy have had an issue with VOX since 2.29p5.

When I launch either 2.29p5 or the Miles beta. Then go offline and press the VOX key. The game will freeze for 15 seconds. If I have any advanced graphics enabled I get the red disabling advanced graphics text and the game unfreezes. If I have none enabled. The FPS drops to 5 after 15sec and the game continues on. Then the FPS recovers to 59. I can then enable the advanced graphics and pressing the VOX key causes no hangs. If I reboot the PC, this initial VOX key press issue repeats itself.

I made sure to reboot between running 2.29p5 and the Miles beta to reproduce the VOX key hang.

Otherwise, once the 15 second hang happened, I could quit the game, then bring back up either version. Press VOX and there would be no game hang as long as I didn't reboot the PC. After one reboot I let the PC sit for 15 minutes and the VOX key hang didn't happen with the 2.29p5. I was unable to reproduce that a second time with 2.29p5 or the Miles Beta.

I was having this problem occasionaly when 2.29p5 first came out. I would start the game. Go online into the LWMA. Press the VOX key to talk to my squad, and the game would hang. Either I would HOST connect lost message then the desktop, or executable error to the desktop. Upon inspection offline afterwards in both cases, advanced graphics was disabled.

I could fix it by going into offline mode, reset my advanced graphics and open the game sound options. Press the "Apply" button. Then press the VOX key which would not hang the game. I could go back into the MA with no problems after that.

Since I never pressed the VOX key offline until performing the FMOD then Miles beta testing. I never thought to press the VOX key offline if I was chasing drones or testing something against the target.

Played for about 4 hours tonight. Went into offline mode first to open the game sounds and hit the apply button. VOX was no problem online and no sound issues with game sounds. The dirvers seem fine. I just have that VOX 15sec hang problem.

Please don't test the voice offline.  Test voice online only.  We can end up chasing a red herring with offline testing of voice.

Ran it for several hours last night, it seems to have reset my sound levels (at least everything was a lot louder) but other than that it ran fine... I could definitely hear people on range vox more clearly, but that could be the volume thing.

HiTech,

Please advise.

When ever a new update comes out, if it's more than a small update I download a full version. Backup my folders. Uninstall and reinstall. So the folders you want are from when you first released 2.29.

Should I perform a fresh install. Not copy over my folders and go online to test VOX?

I unfortunately run Windows8....and had trouble getting my CH HOTAS set to work.  I did get the CH products to work

but since I had trouble getting CH Products configured testing the sound system appears risky to me.

So far very Good.

1. - Uninstalled.
2. - Reinstalled, using ALL default settings and went online first with 2.29p5. Pressed "T" then "F12" no lockup or disco. Spawned into a feild gun and chatted on range. Tuned self and talked to self. No lockups. At this point using only the keyboard and mouse to control guns and actions in the game.

Sound settings all left at the install default.

Speaker Layout - Use Windows Speaker configuration
Microphone - MS Sound Mapper
Speakers - Primary Sound Driver
Headset - Primary Sound Driver

3. - Installed Miles Beta and repeated online test. No problems and video settings all defaults from install.
4. - Next I installed the HiRes Pac and set textures to 1024 and FOV to 120.
5. - Online testing both executables. Tested VOX from a manned gun with loud audio action, fires, explosions and no change of default graphics. No VOX hangs or stutters. Slight FPS drop depending what I was looking at.

I'm sorry to say that I backed up the settings from the FMOD test period which forced the following so the game didn't crash to the desktop when I pressed the VOX key.

Speaker Layout - 5.1
Microphone - Plantronics 780
Speakers - Plantronics 780
Headset - Plantronics 780

Here is the default sndgrp.cfg versus my backed up sndgrp.cfg.

All is good. Copyed settings back over sans the sndgrp.cfg file. Went online with the Miles Beta and everything works with VOX.

I could be confused but, it sounds like the directional 3D sound with the beta is slightly better than with the 2.29p5. I was getting better long distance audio resolution of feint sound effects.

I played for about an hour and 15 minutes and I only noticed one issue. When new planes came within 800 yards, or spawned on the runway in front of me, there was a slight stutter before the plane appeared and I had the sound.

played with the new sound on for about 4 or 5 hours and have no problems whatsoever.  no stutters, game freezes or crashes.  which is a big reversal from the prior test.

I also used the new beta with almost no problems. The only problem I found was that the mic db boost setting was reset to 0 each time I started AH.

No idea if this means anything to you, but I have not changed my sound set up but this week as I am flying my sounds all drop off. Like I have dragged the slider to the left and quieted the master volume. I also notice that the slider works in chunks not smoothly.

Worked ok for around 3 hours on this 3rd or 4th session. Was gunning on CV twin 5' repelling air attack and had a possible single sound anomaly where the amplitude of the sound of my gun firing was elevated 3-6 DB.  About a minute later ahmiles.exe "stopped working" resulting in a freeze requiring stopping ahmiles in task manager.  At the moment of the crash, someone else was talking on VOX.

When I shut down ahmiles it was accounting for 830MB of ram.

I've been playing with it for a while now. The first mod beta caused a few game crashes that I was unable to recreate, this seems to have been fixed however. There was also an issue with sounds not looping properly and caused a 'poping' sound every so offon. This seems to have been improved in the current version but I can still hear a very slight pop while sounds are looping. Other than that, it has been working great.

I've run into a problem with AHMILES.EXE when alt-tabbing... game crashes 90% of the time.
