I saw another photo of B-24 "Flak Bait" somewhat ironically with a similar plate installed right under the pilots side window. Am I correct to assume this is a field mod of armor plate?

It could also be a patch job.

Seen on a lot of the 8th AF B-24s. I think it was a depot modification done in England before it was sent on to an Operational Bomb Group.

It is additional armor.

Thats what I thought until I saw another B24 with the same thing in a similar spot.

I did notice in both cases that the plate covered some of the nose art of the aircraft. If it is armor, and I am now thinking it is, that's an interesting insight in of itself.

It is armor plate. As I said it was an 8th AF Modification.
