Last night I saw the rare Knight horde, it was a lot of fun trying to combat it!

Ah yes...  Some people have been around long enough to remember the time before the horde...  It was May 8, 2000, sides were evenly matched.  Then more than 3 people logged into the servers, and the first horde was born.

Same as it ever was...

Wiley.

Don't forget the reason we have ENY.

Rook Joint Squad Operations

300+ players would log into the Rooks on a sunday night. Bishops and Knights would be swamped with no way to fight back. The map would cease to function for anyone but the Rooks who ranged everywhere in late war uber rides. That was a Mega Hoard. Players would either jump to Rook adding to the problem or log for the evening. I wonder how many subscriptions HTC lost that year. You know how insulted you feel when ENY does kick in these days.

Todays tourist bus trips are nothing to being completely unable to defend anything against a hoard of hundreds flying uber rides with no ENY. Back then, think of fighter sweeps with 30 P51D and the bombers haven't arrived yet with the rest of their hoard that carpet bombed Large Airfeilds and the town to nothing in one pass. Then repeat that all night in both countries with hoards of fighters closing down airfeilds for the bombers toodling along in their own hoards flattening feilds.

At least you can fight todays hoards and beat them. If you want to get of your kester and defend the feild they are attacking before they destroy the hangers. Too much like work for too many these days. It's easier to beg HiTech to kill natural free association to achive objectives with imposed rules. Or beg him to change the game's backend to force them to bring a bigger hoard with more bombs so you can ignor having to fight them longer befor their numbers swamp that local area.

Hoards have sure come a long way since the days a hoard ment you couldn't get off the ground on sunday nights. Can they get any worse??

The difference between now and then is that then we had hordes "now and then" and they were easily ignored or you could find a fight some place else.

Today, hordes are the norm. Your either fighting with one, or against one. When you look for fights other were they are the things that have become the few and far between.

I was member of Nightmare Squad when RJO first started. Idea was to co-ordinate a few squads during the week for planned attack across multiple bases at once. First couple weekends it was great to be involved and see the planning unfold. Unfortunately the horde mentality of the masses took over, couple initial squads dropped out because of that and other reasons. Subsequently the planning and tactics for RJO was taken over by hordes just looking to roll a map as quickly and easily as possible.

RJO at first was great, mission planning and co-ordination during week best I've ever been apart of and unlikely to ever see again.

All goood deeds never go unpunished. Human nature is to push boundieries until the house falls in, then claim the devil made them do it at the trial.

Hordes are okay by me. But gee, why do some wait until I'm fighting 3 bad guys and then come in for the pick. I think they have no confidence in their team mates.

Id be happy to see the RJO come back. The reason is that the missions were planned and laid out with multiple groups sort the force, while large was hitting a number of bases at the same time. Even if you could only get a half dozen guys together to defend at a spot you had a chance to do it. As it is now with todays horde a half dozen guys might get through the first pass, but then everything is flat and your upping from the next base back which in most cases will get you there wayyyyyy to late to help, or even pick off a few lemmings as they disappear to up for the next un-defended base.
