Title: Windows Update 4/10/2013
Post by: Chalenge on April 10, 2013, 05:31:50 PM
Windows Update today released an update for several Nvidia cards. Hide the update and download any new drivers from Nvidia, or your specific GPU manufacturer.

You should never accept video drivers from MS when you can get them yourself from Nvidia or your card manufacturer. I would say the same is probably true of audio drivers. The reason I say that is because it is always best to completely remove the older drivers before installing new ones. I even go to the trouble of refusing MS updates altogether, so that when I reboot after a driver removal I don't have drivers pushed onto my system by MS (which will happen).

I think the easiest way to go about a fresh install of drivers is to:
1. Download the drivers and put them on your desktop.
2. Reboot into safe mode.
3. Remove your old drivers with the Control Panel software removal tool.
4. Remove your Ethernet line from your PC.
5. Reboot into safe mode.
6. Use a driver cleaner on your system.
7. Reboot into safe mode.
8. Make sure that the C:\Nvidia\DisplayDriver\ folder is empty.
9. Install the new drivers from the driver install program you saved on your desktop (install ONLY display drivers and not sound, 3D, or anything else unless you need them).
10. Reboot.
11. Reinstall Ethernet line.

Failing to do it this way can break your drivers ability to control the video card because of older files. Nvidia has never been able to create an excellent installer that can account for older drivers and I think MS just makes matters worse.

Nothing a hammer won't be able to fix.

Zack if everything is still working then you don't need to do anything. If you start to say random freezes in AH or you can't make changes in your video control panel and have them take affect then you need to clean things up and start over. The process I listed is just to be sure it never happens to begin with.

I use drivercleaner.net, but there may be something out there that is free.
