Title: Ultimate Screenshot Contest
Post by: USAFCAPcTSgt on April 15, 2013, 04:50:52 AM
With all the capabilities of the game and wide range of available aircraft and ground vehicles, we should be able to use our imaginations to stage the best screenshots of the game.  No icons used.

For example:

Using the main runway on a small airfield and putting wingtip to wingtip every kind of aircraft available from one end to the other end of the runway.
Placing a main battle tank right in the middle of dozens of enemy tanks with all turrets pointed at the center tank.
Formation flying with creative aircraft usage.

Plus other ideas that players come up.

Start posting the screenshots.

Or we could all grab a plane and enjoy some great fights instead.

Not a screen shot but I organised this little shot a few weeks back.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5DhxgLkz4Ys

I have rendered glow effects onto the other tanks from each gun firing, and added a smoke effect as the film viewer was only showing up my own tanks smoke.

Thanks guys, Its part of a longer movie I am making... If I ever get around to finishing it  :bolt:.

I am not 100% happy with the smoke effect on the 2nd last tiger 1, its a little off. but finding free to use stock footage of cannon fire with a black/dark back round is not easy.

Are you planning to use sound effects aswell?

Not for this one, I am just going to use a song like I did with my last full video. I normally try to find songs that can be represented in AH. i.e watch my last film and see where the lyrics match the action on screen.

Problem with AH Screenshots, the graphics don't lend themselves too well to still shots even with Photoshop. Add to that, the difficult and restricted camera views.

And that's with all the sliders maxed out.

The real trade off is that AH is still using a graphics and physics engine first developed in the 90s. Plus that screenshot wasn't meant to only illustrate the graphics but how a good camera perspective makes the screenshot.

AH also sadly lacks good free flowing camera for screenshots.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. there's no right or wrong way to do it or to present it. everyone has their own perspective of what is good and whats not,  when it comes to pictures. they're all good to the owner of each photo.

The camera spins around a central point of axis which makes for restricted screenshots and movies. As per those examples you have just given to try and prove me wrong but both shots are with the camera rotating from a central point, hence both shots look very ordinary. Not considering the average graphics, terrain graphics, no Depth of Field etc

Film Viewer you can't move the camera freely to take images from any point to obtain different angles/perspectives.

I didn't say it was impossible I said it lacks a good free flowing camera..

Actually you can move the camera freely. Try it yourself: open the film you wanna take the SS, Press F1 then F8, now use the arrows in your keyboard and the numpad, position in whatever angle and free spot in the entire arena you wish.
here is another very old SS of mine

Totally not on the center but if you don't believe me just do what I said above.

You can also move the camera from the cockpit view just like you do to adjust head pos in game. In the film viewer when you do this there is no cockpit limit to stop you moving anywhere you want.

Would I like the film viewer updated with improved controls, sure. Multipoint tracking with a point of focus, where each curve is transition to smoothy with the option to change camera speed/acceleration between points. None of which was used in your link.

NIROS! that's another VERY good example of what the film viewer is capable of.

Man, you just gotta check out the media made by the community, I think you decided to post without searching before.
You've got since the most action increased heartbeat stuff to some fluid artistic. Some folks even like playing with the historical theme!
Take a look at the films and screenshots session and download the Doolittle Raiders film! that's a masterpiece. Of course the graphics are from an old version of the game but you can't use the statement that "the film viewer is way to limited". The video you posted used only 2 kinds of camera shots. Both available in our Film viewer.

Feel free to check out the video makers! the community has done a lot of cool stuff.

This is an oldie but still one of my favorites. I rarely film anymore.
It was taken during either an FSO or SEC. Its been so long I
forget.

Yes I have looked at many films by the community, included those that you posted and to me they always look poor. Add the average graphics and isn't very watchable other than for die hard AH fans.

Anyway, example of FS movie with good (interesting) camera work and added effects, camera shake etc. Though music choice is rubbish.

Camera shake is not part of the film capturing in those videos, also there are many community made mods to capture the image in most of those games, Il-2 included.

You can get the shake with those expensive editing programs and such things.  The video you sent is a good video indeed and it IS beautiful.
What I don't get is this statement that the AH movies are dull. You are jugding only by the graphics level, seems to ME like that's the case at least.

I really don't know... the films in aces High have all the very same angles and camera movement as the ones you sent, what we don't have is that kick arse realism on the textures and models. I am refuting your statemet that the Film Viewer is limited based on the videos you sent... which use the very same "limitations" only with better light effects and details.

There is always something to improve in the FV, that's for sure. Somethings are HARD to make using the tools that we have now but it is POSSIBLE. It takes some more effort but you can make those exact same films if you wish to copy their style.

One basic thing I would like would be a hotkey binded to start/stop shot instead of clicking.  :D

You keep trying to make statement/quote what I haven't said. I said the graphics are average not bad. Obviously it's the odd good furball which keeps me coming back now and then. Certainly never been the graphics or flight realism.

The box aircraft yes, professional addons like PMDG are about as close as you can get to a Level D sim on a PC.  But I wasn't comparing FSX to AH flight modelling.. However improved graphics etc add a lot to the immersion/realism factor.

Absolutely, I know you're only talking about visuals and capture, just throwing the comment out there.

I own FSX and as such feel justified in knocking it down a peg or two, because frankly, having to mod/add to a game that I paid good money for just to get a plane with a decent flight model seems out of order in what is supposedly the premier flight sim line in the world.

Each to their own on their perception of value. I think $40 for the sandbox and then adding $80 (or less) for a near professional level flight simulator is extremely good value and a one off cost.

Take that onine over Vatim is free.

Gixer is right that the graphics are dated, even the newest units, but that is the price we pay for a niche hobby.  The shot he linked of the P-51D, well, my PC is unlikely to be able to run that program at acceptable frame rates even at the lowest settings and I know that my PC is significantly more powerful than many other player's PCs.  It is fine to limit your market to people with high end gaming PCs when your target audience is large enough, but that is not the case for non-arcade combat flight sims.

Having started computer gaming on a Commodore 64 in '80s, the graphics in AH are good enough for me, but I am not going to pretend they are top line, modern game graphics.

Agreed Karnak, but you also know that computer parts are cheaper then they ever have been and excellent graphics cards can be ha for 100 bucks.  That may sound like a lot, but it really isn't.

For 12 years I've listened to the reasoning of the 100mb limit and to keep graphics limited due to player PC specs. I would love to know the real stats of average player PC specs. I would bet (curve over the years) the majority are using systems on average of 2 years old, which are more then capable of running sims at high or ultra high settings like the P51 screenshot.

You don't need a mega gaming rig to play sims at high levels, I just built a new micro atx system for $1,100 NZD (would be far less in US prob about $800) including a radeon 8550 and it runs everything maxed out fine including FSX and other sims. Even the $600 laptop I just had could run AH with all sliders maxed out.

The 100mb limit at (majority of our players have 10 year old PCs) has been an excuse that's gone on long enough. Real reason is that they don't want to spend the time and $ developing a new graphics/physics engine and trying to milk the existing engine for as long as they can. This engine must of been first developed in late 90s, even AH2 didn't look any different and hasn't really changed that much since except for new extra effects, objects and textures.

AH was dated in 2003, now it looks like something I can play on my Galaxy Note 2.  :lol

Thankfully only thing that has kept it going for me when I return every now and then is the odd good furball, but they are becoming less and less with the horde mentality.

I'd hate to see AH go but they seriously need to look at releasing a new version. Otherwise even the small number of hardcore simmers with 10 year old computers and looking for something to play on them won't be enough to keep it going.

Well, my video card is a several hundred dollar card that was recently donated to me by a friend, but my CPU is coming up on eight years old.

The problem is that I am living close to the wire in this economy, and I am certainly not the only one, and my money goes to more important things like my family and home.

Hmm.  That one looks a lot like in Der Grosse Schlag when the bomb group I was in got jumped by a bunch of 190A's.  I wonder if this was you guys.

Yep, I remember the adrenaline from our side, too, when your 190's showed up 11 o'clock high.  Adrenaline and the feeling of "Uh oh."  :aok
