Title: Landing gear sequences
Post by: Chalenge on April 17, 2013, 05:48:31 AM
I noticed a lot of inconsistency in the landing gear times for different airplanes. It's fast for one airplane, accurate for another. Some of the animations don't make sense either, like the F4U wheels that pass right through the doors.

I wish landing gear were all accurate for their particular aircraft.

Thank you, hitech! I hope you saw this one which also concerns sounds:

On the B-25, P-51, the wheels deploy and retract correctly (IE: No clipping).  On the He-111 and the Mossy's (just to name a couple), they clip right through the doors.  So yeah, I would agree.  Would love to see them fixed, if only for the aesthetics. :)

You don't understand! EVERYTHING must be perfect in AH

I would like correct sequencing too.  It is nice when watching, say, an Me410's gear sequencing and a bit jarring when watching, say, a B-29's gears fold right through the doors that folded up without waiting for the gear to be stowed first.

I have the same issue with a Stuka :headscratch:  :furious :bhead

This.

Any help on the issue would be much appreciated...  ;) :D

Perfect example seen here.  Gears on the mossy go right through the doors.

As for the Stuka, it would be nice to be able to get rid of the other gear in the event you actually survive an attack and have one missing.  Would make it a bit easier to land her.

I'd love to see the Corsairs have the separate "Dive Break" setting for their gear (only main gear deploy, and IIRC they don't lock in place) modeled.

a lot of people would probably like to see a dive break setting on the corsairs...would stop people from using them in ways they weren't designed for.

Only the main landing gear WERE designed to withstand high airspeeds for use as dive breaks, so having the gear snap off under speed wouldn't be any more realistic.

Now maybe how the effect is implemented needs a look (IE, drag doesn't affect the plane until the gear have fully deployed and keeps affecting the plane until the gear are retracted, while slowing the deployment speed to prevent people from quickly popping them up and down).

From reading the book of the test pilot at Vought I don't believe the gear were intended to be deployed at high speed. Getting all gear to be properly timed would be a great first step. I recorded a B-25 on jacks cycling gear and it perfectly agrees with AH. Somebody did their homework there!

I didn't SAY deployed. I said withstand.

I didn't SAY deployed. I said withstand.

Then you went on to say "the effect is implemented" (meant to say as implemented I think), so I answered based on that.

I was talking about the drag effect, not the actual animation of the gear deploying.

IIRC, the game currently models full drag the instant you hit the button to deploy the gear. Flaps certainly work the same way: Full effect for that notch as soon as you hit the button, even if they haven't actually finished deploying.

Same with the 'landing on wheels' aspect of landing gear, right?  As long as you hit 'G' even an instant before touchdown, it's out and locked.  I wish both flaps and gear coming out took time to occur.
