This was a massive explosion at the West Fertilizer plant. It was heard over 45 miles away.
Quote
“It was a small fire and then water got sprayed on the ammonia nitrate, and it exploded just like the Oklahoma City bomb,”

Thought I'd add the address into Google Map, to have a look at surrounding area.

Location    West Fertilizer Co,
1471 Jerry Mashek Drive,
West, Texas, United States

Now how on earth does a Fertilizer Plant used to produce ammonium nitrate, get placed not only near a residential town, but between two schools, a rest home and a hospital??  :bhead

No wonder the death and injury toll is so high.

In my town in the UK they built a Oil processing plant next to a Primary school, 100 yards from it, divided by a wire fence :old:

It was in a poor part of town, I am not sure if that means anything :old:

Why were those buildings allowed to be constructed near the plant?

Texas has had this happen before.. Ship carrying Ammonium Nitrate caught fire, blew up in a Texas harbor, BOOM! (Galveston?) leveled Most of the city.. Have an old Documentary series called "Survival", narrated by Spencer Tracy, has an episode about that..

Wow! :pray

Meh.  One in 365 chance isn't that low.

Also, yes, if you want to think of things in threes the ricin letters sent to Mississippi Senator Wicker and President Obama might count.  Apparently that guy was a conspiracy nut who thought they were conspiring to sell body parts on the black market.

My condolences to those affected by this accident.

Just FYI, the picture posted in the OP is NOT correct.

That picture is after an oil refinery explosion in February 2008.

What a mess. How some plants are allowed to be where they are amazes me. Reminds me of Danvers MA explosion. Way too close to homes.

The plant was there before the houses. So the question should be: why were the houses allowed to be built so close to the plant?

My favorite industrial accident.  A coastal lake got flushed into a massive working salt mine.  Nobody hurt but barges and houses got flushed and a tidal river flowed the wrong way.

The investigation is now completed on this one. The explosion was a criminal act which has been determined after an ATF investigation.

I still believe there are no accidents.
