The Ki-43-II and A6M5 are using the same engine (HA-115 and Sakae-21, Takeoff power 1130 or 1150hp).
In Aces High, the Ki-43 uses takeoff power (2800rpm +300mg boost) as WEP.
Militaly Power is running at 2700rpm +200mg boost by E6B.
The A6M5 doesn't have WEP, but it can use takeoff power (2750rpm +300mg boost) as Military Power.
I feel it's a disadvantage for Ki-43.
It have to turn on WEP to get the same power as A6M5, but it is limited power.
What is the difference simulated in Aces High...?
Thanks,
Mitsu

Doesn't SOUND like they're using the same engine...

I recall the discussion when the Ki-84 was added and, I believe, Pyro commented that the Navy and Army had different limitations for the same engines, hence WEP on the N1K2-J and, initially, no WEP at all on the Ki-84.

That's what I thought...but Pkun said Ki-43-II should not have WEP (Ki-43-III should have it), I'll ask him about it.

I believe what HTC did for the Ki-84, and it sounds like the Ki-43 as well, is allow a short WEP based on takeoff power.

They are both of the same basic design. There are small differences in sea level power out-put and in super charger gears' critical altitudes. The totally different designations are due to the nomelecture of the different service branches.
I've seen slightly differing out puts for planes depending on the source.

The difference is probably in the differing terminology used regarding the power settings. There are several references in literature that mention A6M having a "WEP" aswell. There's a separate control knob in the A6M's instrument panel on the left for emergency boost control (as mentioned by Mr. Robert Mikesh). It was pulled out and turned 90 degrees in order to enable the use of emergency boost.

Here's couple pages from Famous Airplanes Of The World: Army Type 1 Fighter "Hayabusa" that talk about the power settings:

May as well be in Japanese to me.

Oops...I can read it. :D
Here is a few.
Ki-43-II
Nakajima HA-115 Type 2 1150hp.
Takeoff Power: 1120hp
Military 1st: 1020hp/2800m (*1100hp/2850m by Nakajima's data)
Military 2nd: 980hp/5600m (*990hp/5600m by Koukuu-Honbu Gijutsubu's data)
By the way...
Sakae-21 Engine
Takeoff:1,130hp 2,750 rpm
Military 1st:1,100PS/2,700rpm/2,850 m
Military 2nd: 980PS/2,700rpm/6,000 m
According to Navy Sakae-engine manual, a takeoff power is limited to 1 minute.

It could use as WEP (takeoff power) for 1 minute.
One of Japanese researcher said it could used 10 minutes in the late war, because Japanese Navy and Army have eased its regulations.

Would I right to assume that it was up to the pilot to determine how long, and not a physical restriction from the airplane itself?

Ha-115 and Sakae21 were same engine.
Different is only Reduction drive.
it's poosible Both engines use Boost 300mmHg.
But it need 95 Octane fuel.
(This was written on A6M3 operation manual.
If you want to read, I can upload after 2days)
Of cource you know, IJA and IJN had such fuel on only Indonesia.
They didn't use such fuel in other place.
But They want to use 300mmHg boost.
It were Ha115-II(used by Ki43-III) and Sakae 31(used by A6M6 as Zero 53)
Their engines use 300mmHg boost by water methanol injection as WEP.
I think AH's Ki43-II is like a slowly version of Ki43-III.

What octane fuel did Japan use during the war?

What octane fuel did Japan use during the war?
It is usually referred to as 87 octane, but that is just an estimate. Late war in particular they were having to use additives to eek out what fuel they had left.

I heard that Japanese Army and Navy have used actually 91 octane fuel during war.
P-kun-san will comment about this later...

What octane fuel did Japan use during the war?
IJN used 92 octane from start of war.
but, IJA used 87 octane in start of war.
(Ki43-I was tested by 87 octane.)
but, it was changed at 1942.
It's a ok that you think many IJA planes used 92 octane.
If IJA could use 100 octane, it was a exactly Ki84 got over 660km/h...

Thanks for the reply Pkun
