Folks, I have an assignment for you. If you have a 30-30 rifle, or a 30-06 even, go out and shoot a round into an aluminum can. Do it again with another can filled with water. What happens?
Imagine .30 cal ammo being sprayed into the body of an aircraft at hundreds of rounds per minute. The .303 ammo is long overdue a mod to enhance the damage.
.303 should do what .50cal currently does. Then, .50 cal should be doing almost the amount of damage a 20mm is doing. Everything else seems to be right on the money.
Thanks,

You have grossly exaggerated ideas of what nonexplosive rounds do.
Per the US Navy a single M2 20mm cannon installation (Hispano Mk II in RAF service) provided the same firepower as an installation of three M2 .50 caliber machine guns. That is, the ten 20mm rounds per second were equal to thirty-six .50 caliber rounds per second.
And you think the .50 caliber should do almost as much as a 20mm cannon?
EDIT:
M2 20mm cannon against a 55 gallon steel drum (not an aluminum can):

you sure do a lot of thinking...not that it is good thinking.
consider the impact damage to solid materials like aluminum at 500+ yards using .30 cal ammo, especially when the projectile is chasing the target. you don't have the kinetic energy needed to cause the same damage that a .50 or 20mm would.

With practice your gunnery will improve. Setting your convergence to 200 for .30 cal and 300 for .50 cal and shooting at your convergence distance while keeping the ball centered will give you good results.
