Number of ports are a bit irrelevant as long as it is externally powered.  That said, it is quite possible to over power an externally powered USB hub if you connect too many high power demand devices to it.

As far as brands go, I just ordered a new one.  I'll post to let you know how it goes.

Earl,

I have a couple of belkin powered hubs,1 is around 10years old and still going strong!

you can pick up a 4 port hub for around 20 bucks, unless you need more ports that should be sufficient enough for your game controls.

I use a Belkin with 4 ports. I have used it for a couple years and have never experienced any kind of problem.
Placing it on my desktop allowed me to plug in the headset, keyboard, and mouse much easier.

It could not handle The Saitek X-52 Pro (two USB plugs), so it it plugged into my 'puter directly.

I'm using a Tripp-Lite 10 port.  It was one of the cheapest 8+ port powered hubs I could find (I needed more than 4 ports).  Has worked well.

I have a Belkin powered USB hub with 7 connections.  I have my T16000, Cougar MFD, pedals and TrackIR plugged in to it without any problem.
