Title: Irony
Post by: Lusche on April 29, 2013, 07:52:10 AM
My worst subjects in school were English and Math. While I was really a horrible student in general (trust me, this is not an understatement), these two were generally at the bottom of the barrel (along with chemistry and Latin). Roughly translated into American marks, I was constantly receiving solid "F"s. In later years I was turning in blank sheets when doing math tests, as I didn't even had a slightest clue what the topic was really about. What happy day when I could finally get rid of math in the 12th grade...

And here I am now, crunching numbers for a huge part of the day and writing about it in English all the time. As a matter of fact, I write at least 10 times more in English than in German. There are several topics I actually have trouble to write about in German.

Who would have ever thought this 30 years ago? Not me for sure... :lol

The irony is that someone from Germany has such a great command of the English language, yet so many on the board make no effort at all.

I think you do a great job with English.  I have corrected you before in the hope that you wanted to get it right and improve and you have taken the criticism well.

Almost same here. I used to hate math with passion and now I'm getting my living from software that is basically doing calculations :)

I've seen tulips like that with a huge middle-aged disappointment on the front side. I hope this is not such a case!

Yes, yes it does...

...Oh wait, you meant with the reading.  Not so much. :D

And as to the OP, it blows me away that Lusche didn't like math as a kid...  Although I never liked learning other languages either, then lately have discovered I have somewhat of an aptitude for it.  Funny how the world works sometimes.  Much respect for all he adds to the community, that's for sure.

Wiley.

Absolutely not. Math -in school- was absolute horrific. Much to the detriment of my father, who is an amateur astronomer and as such very apt at it.

Today I know why. It was way too abstract.
In the primary school, where math teachings were still rooted in 'real life' I had good marks, but later I totally 'lost it'. That's mainly because I could (and can) never learn for learning's sake, which hampered me a lot in most subjects.  Math is just particularly hard hit by that, because once you miss a few important things in algebra, you are done.

English was similar, it was simply too boring, so I couldn't focus myself in the classroom. Two minutes of "Mr. Tremblehand catches a burglar" or "Excuse me, is this the way to Picadilly Pircus?" (*yaaaaaaaawn*) and my mind went astray. Totally  :uhoh
Instead, I learned English from games. I was doing FRP's a lot, and all the *cool* stuff was in English. Later I was doing wargames, which also existed only as imports from the US. 'Learning' English was sooo easy all of a sudden...  :lol

If I may, what got you so into numbers and stats?

Curiosity.
There was that day about 5 years ago when I wondered about the distribution of fighter hit% amongst the players. It all started there...

Looking back, I realize I have always been fascinated by all kinds of stats & charts before (as long as the topic was interesting to me, stats just for the sake of stats doesn't do it), but that was more a subconscious thing.

I couldn't write in any discernible manner at age 7. I had no punctuation at age 11 and I had no grasp over sentence structure whatsoever.

I hate mathematics with an absolute passion and have no musical talent.

Now I am a writer, my favorite science is physics, I am a college student dealing in history and composition.

And I play the Ukulele.

Things change with age.

I like brussel sprouts now. I used to hide them under the table when I was a kid.

The 2 courses I hated most in college,  Cobol - shows how old I am - and accounting.  My first job out of school was writing an accounting package in Cobol.   :lol
