Title: A-20G cockpit armor... Where is it?
Post by: Widewing on April 30, 2013, 11:07:19 PM
The Aces High A-20G has always been exceptionally susceptible to pilot wounds and deaths from single ping hits on the nose.

The issue is that there is apparently no armor in front of the pilot.

The A-20G was actually very well armored. This includes armor plate and an armored glass panel behind the windshield.

Perhaps, some day, after at least 7 years since added, HTC can rectify this, and add the missing ventral gun as well.

Whilst they're at it. Fix the cockpit armour on every plane I fly. Especially the Tiff.  :old:
I was pw'd yesterday from slightly low dead 6 F4U1d at 400 yds. Straight through the tail, along the fuselage, missing radio's batteries, spars and controls etc. Through the seat armour and wounded the pilot :headscratch:

They can have all the armour they want, as long as they can't utterly outfly a Fw190a8 in all but roll and dive acceleration, with or without internal bombload. they can have the 4*20mm as well.
That crew that can hit with 3,5-4g in turns makes captain America yellow.

Earlier, I wrote about an incident when I met an A20 over friendly territory, he first out turned me easy ( ok, maybe) then, still in hard turn shot off one of my rons, I dive and he he smoked my engine from straight 6 at 1k out, then he did a lazy turn and dropped his bombs on town.

wish I could use film but occasional stuttering happens when I turn film on.

Something is very wrong with that bird (or the A8).

I know most of the US aircraft had their cockpits armored.

Co-E  they are better than the A8 in turn energy burning  :headscratch, better zoomclimb, and guns are lazers, with better E, situation would have been another one, but an A20 with rear gunner can be a PITA too :old:

Scissors only works if the pilot of the poorer rolling aircraft takes the bait. Scissoring eats E very quickly. All the pursuer has to do is go vertical, roll inverted (high yo-yo) and the 190 is toast. Low, slow and flopping about like a landed flounder.

I agree with WW....IIRC the in game plane carries the weight of ventral gun/ammo.
I had the privilege of knowing a vet who piloted A-20's in south pacific. He was surprised I knew about the plane. I specifically asked about the ventral gun, he said some would take it...maybe mission specific? He said it was fast on the deck...

What about that drag that it adds?

Since we have the A-20G with the powered upper turret instead of the flex turret, means the Havoc we have is an A-20G somewhere between blocks G-20 and G-45.  In that case, then the ventral gun should be a single .50 caliber machine gun.

The EARLY A-20G <-1, 1st 250>, had the ventral gun and there was no manned auto-turret <electric> on top <less weight> and had 4x20mm and 2X50cal in the nose.  :O
