Title: Life in a P38
Post by: Randy1 on May 07, 2013, 05:45:19 PM
The VOX opened on the Range channel.
"See that 109?'
"Ya," I replied."
I pulled a low G turn then up just behind his tail then rolled into a flat turn for the shot.  The merge was mine.
"Watch out for the 190," the Vox knocked the smile off my face.
"There is another 109 coming in on you. . . no two more."
"You got two 190s on your six too.
I was out of options.  I broke off the shot. I tried a diving BRD pulling out inches off the deck at 400 MPH after 8000 feet spun off the altimeter.
The vox crackled in my ear one last time.
The rear view showed all red.
"Where did they all go?
My green comrades comments bit as hard as one of the three 109's cannon or maybe it was one of the two 190s all chasing me now.
"They are all on me," I got out just before the explosion.

If you think the P-38 is bad, try the Mossie.  I've done both and the Mossie is the stronger magnet.

ehhh...you want to be in multiple 8 vs 1 every night....try the Zero.

You had an SA fail....no worries happens to us all....but its not the P-38's fault

the problem you had was that you dove away. Your suppose to do a zig and a couple of zags and kill them all.

The 38 is a fighting machine! Diving away got you killed, fighting you might have taken a few with you.

Honestly, the worst plane for that has got to be the Ju-87. The reality is that most enemies nearby will drop what they're doing to try to kill you, you'll meet at least one enemy in virtually all sorties, and theres always that one guy absolutely hell-bent on killing you.

No doubt, in some ways they are.

But a 109 isn't going to make it the 1120 miles from Rabaul to Guadalcanal and back  :neener:

no.... But the 410 or 110 probally
could have :noid.
Would they be effective? Probally
not.

thus your point is invalid as a whole.  (between me and you, 38 is my number 2 favorite allied plane)

Funny, few of TopGun had some fun once flying d3as and Stukas to dogfight, I lost count of how many whines and cheater comments came from them.

I tried the whole D3a and furball, but I frankly suck. I do have a few kills in a SBD and TBM which are funny, mostly spitfires of course.

Tbm at 40% fuel can move. At 25 she can dance. Tbm is probally one of the best
fightable dog fighters. D3A haven't tryied it. Thinknim going to have to

Was talking about a single engined aircraft. Thus your counter point is invalid as a whole.

It just means you are right where you need to be in a 38.  Right in the middle of things :aok

Being the favorite target of every con within 6K is half the fun of flying the 38.

Think of it this way...  If you're in a fight,  you're gonna take out the most dangerous first,  right?    :)

how would that be when OP is talking about the p38, which has 2 engines? Yes I. Terms of range American fighter will generally have longer legs than say italian and German fighters.

But nothing can compare to the 163 in terms
of range :rofl :rofl

I remember being in one of those, so fun! Best moment ever is when I saw a spit 16 running to ack with 6 D3As on its tail!  :rofl

Bad?! this is one of the mossie's best features. Who needs the fastest plane when the targets come to you?

The ~loose deuce~ boys love my mossie. I fly around flashing the red "Moss" sign and the bad guys blow away their E to get a crack at me, while my squadies in their poss A8's get free shots at them :D

410 is even stronger magnet and it also cannot run, cannot evade and loses wings with a few shots, easy kill. Of course you do not know that since you do not fly it.

When my fellow green guy vox'ed "Where did they all go" It was so telling of how the other reds abandoned the fight with my fellow greens to chase down a P38.

The 109 I engaged as it turned out, was the first of a horde of 109s and 190s.  It could be too the 109 driver called for help and the horde responded in a pack.  Loss of SA? Not this time.

When i pushed the P38's nose straight straight down, my thought was that most of the 109s and 190s would not want to blow off that much E in a pack attack.  I was wrong.

I've seen Latrobe in a situation like this.  He seems to use the ground as a way of limiting his exposure to attack then using the vertical and direction reversals to get shoots buy keeping the chasing horde off balance.

Nah, I prefer to fly fighters.  :p

The single sortie I did in the Me410 was an hour climb, followed by a dive to position on B-24s, followed by wife ack shooting me down..  No fighters got near me, but I can't say your statement sounds unrealistic.  It sounds dead on to me.

109+190 working in concert @ low-medium altitude = lethal combo

TnB with a 109 and you get blasted by BnZ 190

... or follow a 190 zoom climbing and you get caught by 109 on your tail

do that very effectively. Althought the baited sometimes gets hurt :(

not hording but a useful bomb / rocket truck.   Maybe HTC should re-classify it to B38.

They can climb high enough to be above defenders and if they evade the ground after drop, can smash it up into the ack or other un-wary flyers.

The best kept secret about P-38s is their A2A capabilites once they finish their duty being a B-38  :t
The (perceived) slow instantaneous turns makes it up in almost-no-vice stability in sustained, near stalling speed turns

Do you know how many time I purposely flew my Stuka into a cloud of enemies JUST to drag them down and to Trololol kill them with my cookie when they attempt to HO me? Its fantastic!

Sigh, hopefully one day you'll either
A. grow up
B. Contact a psychiatrist and get help
C. Quit AH and take your delusions with you.
