Title: A6M Clips wing on Helicopter at Airshow
Post by: Nath[BDP] on May 13, 2013, 12:50:52 AM
Pretty crazy.  The A6M pilot calls a low pass and flies right into a hovering chopper clipping his wing and smacking the ground

He couldn't help himself, it was an American helicopter and a Zero just can't change it's Hinomarus. Kamikaze, long live the Emperor!

The guy flying the zero is an idiot and obviously has no peripheral vision remaining either. He owes the guy a helicopter.

Why was the Copter hovering upsidedown?  :headscratch:

Because it can!  :aok  A South African friend of mine is an absolute virtuoso with model helicopters. He can make them dance. I'm sure there's videos all over youtube. My favourite memory of him was sitting on the roof of a van with the helicopter flying formation alongside as we sped down a road, a private road I might add. Brilliant.

agreed, on the idiot part. He got too focused on his own plane at a busy RC field. Can't do that and expect to bring your plane home in one peice at a busy place like that, but he was calling "low pass" and the other pilot either didn't hear him, ignored him, or just has a different altitude definition of a "low pass". IMO they both are at fault for not paying enough attention to thier surroundings.  This does illustrate why I prefer foam/electric RC planes. Bring a hot glue gun or some foam safe super glue and 90% of the time you're back in the air in less than 30 minutes.

Foam/Electric planes are fun, but not even close to scale models nowadays.  I fly mostly electric planes myself, but fly at a field that host mostly large scale model pilots, and the difference in cost, performance, etc is huge.

I bet that helicopter in the video was worth 10x less than the Zero, and it sucks seeing accidents, but they happen all the time.  The first weekend this year a scale P38 had a radio failure at my home field and was found about a 1/2 mile away in hundreds of pieces from a power on crash.

I've never understood fields that have the helicopter flying area in the same place as the runway/flyby route like the one in this video.  It's just a recipe for disaster - calling "low pass" all you like doesn't mean that anyone will hear you, or obey you if they do.  Such was the case here.  At my field, I have to fly my 450/500 size helo's in a separate area that is well away from the runway and flightline of the fixed wing models, with a cement large round heli pad I can do  flippidy do 3d flying at, and never have to worry about some ten thousand dollar scale model hitting me, and having some  60 year old crochety geezer come after me with his cane because of it.

I just picked up my first glider, a Radian Pro, and I got a good camera to put on it, so I hope to have some decent videos over the water at our cabin this weekend.

Even if the Zero pilot did see and was perfectly aware of the helo, there was nothing he could do except of gone wider - the helo rc pilot executed a flip, which if you've seen an rc helo do is a very fast maneuver that will make them leap up a few feet in the act.  One second it could of looked like a clean buzz 6-feet above the helo, the next it's inverted and in his face.

Honestly, I'm gonna go with "when two idiots collide" on this one.  The guy flying the Zero didn't have to buzz a hot runway so fast and low knowing there were other r/cs flying in the area, and the guy flying the rc helo likely didn't have to utilise the dead-center-above the hot runway as his chosen spot for his acrobatic box/area.  It's a big sky.

This is obviously photoshopped. We all know from AH that when 2 planes collide only 1 gets damaged. The helo should still be in the air. :joystick:

I guess I'm the only idiot who wondered why it wasn't in the national media until I noticed they were RC birds <doh!>

Meh, I've landed that in FSO with the same bird.

it's actually the other way 'round. the guy with the helicopter shouldn't have been doing 3d over the runway while there was fixed wing in the air.

he was doing the most stupid assassin unrealistic flying....otherwise known as 3d flying. he shouldn't have been there.

at our club, we have a separate area for helis to fly......
