Had this once before but it resolved when I downloaded from website instead of auto-updating. This time that didnt help. Each time I start AH it gives me a message that it cant find the second to the last update (which is indeed in the normal file slot).. closing the two popups that accompany this starts AH normally, but everytime it downloads hi-res pack all over again. Windows 7 with all updates...

It sounds like there have been multiple installations of Aces High, or you have installed the game in the "Programs Files" folder.
As I cannot sit at your computer and see what it is like, here is what you should do. If you are running any type of anti-xxxx software on your computer, SHUT IT DOWN!! before continuing.
Remove everything related to the game, from the desktop and the hard drive. Be sure to use the un-installer from the Control "Panel Programs and Features" to do this. Make sure there are no desktop ICONs left on your screen.
Re-install a fresh copy of the current full version of the game. At the same time, go ahead and download and install the high resolution texture pack from the WEB site and install it (if you want to use that package). If you do not want to use that package, set the "Maximum Texture Size" in the games "Video Settings", to 512.

Nope... one installation and it's NOT in the programs folder.... This isnt a major thing, but is a little annoying... I'll try th fresh install later...

The hires update has happened to me a couple of times in the past. All I did was double-click on the hires executable that was downloaded by the game and dropped into my game folder. Once I manually ran the executable, it no longer kept trying to download the hires pack while I play.
As far as the game not updating successfully, I haven't encountered that one.

There are a handful of things which can interfere with the game updater, assuming the game is properly installed. Usually it is an anti-xxxx (Norton/McAfee/Kaspersky are really bad about this one) program, or malware/spyware or a virus.
