Title: "eyes in the cockpit" dash view - SHFT F6 toggle
Post by: Old Sport on May 18, 2013, 05:41:58 PM
I would like to suggest an unobstructed cockpit dash view of gauges that could be toggled by, perhaps, SHFT F6, or something. When flying the P-38 the yoke obstructs the view and if you position yourself to see a particular low gauge, you may block a different one. Other planes also have yokes or layouts that make it difficult to see all the gauges. I've also noticed that after varying the view settings it becomes difficult to see all gauges at once. This new dash view would simply eliminate yokes and sticks, and get the entire dash on screen.

Best.

so you want the option to hide the stick...

Not exactly what you want, but you can press KP8 and then move the head view about and hit F10.  KP8 is the second straight forward view.  KP0+KP8 is the forward down view.

You know, come to think of it, I've never been in an aircraft where a slight repostioning of the head or upper body would not
"clear" a gauge for viewing.  Of course I haven't been in all of em  :D  It's been a long time, but I don't remember the stick in the
Phantom blocking any at all, and the F4 had alot more dials than these birds do.

Lancaster altimeter while at cruising speed is almost impossible to see.

My suggestion isn't only about hiding the stick gyene, and true Karnak, you can position the KP8 key and set it by F10.

But if you go to Video Settings and lower the value of Custom Field of View you are suddenly "closer" to everything in the cockpit, and I do not see any way to back up the view enough to be able to see the entire dash.

My suggestion is that each plane get a SHFT F6 dash view that will always display all gauges without the stick or yoke, no matter how you have set your video options. Hope that explains it more clearly.

While you are waiting for your wish to come true, try lowering the FOV in video settings then use page up and down to get a good head position.

The TrackIr system really helps too.

Good wish.

While the example that Im going to use is a bit extreme, it is about the same idea.

You have trouble seeing the gauges because you don't want to bother using the keys to see around the yoke/stick. I don't want to bother rolling my plane around to see past the nose, so I'd like the <shift> F6 to make the nose of which ever plane I'm in disappear so I can track the bad guys easier.

If you want an arcade game to play buy an Xbox.

+1

This is a good wish.  Even if you set up the "8" key or your hat switch to see your gauges (I do), some of the gauges are still hard to see on certain planes.  Make it key-mappable, like "look forward".  Nothing XBox about pilots being able to see their instruments.

I can't really agree with that comparison, The Fugitive.  We use the same method to roll and clear our nose as a real pilot would, but the subtle movement needed to see around a control stick is a lot harder to do in the game than in reality where it is pretty much an unconscious movement.

I have set my FOV to 125 and have no problem seeing anything but the Gyro compass.

I did say it was a bit of a stretch, but if you use TrackIR or practice using the arrow keys, looking around your stick/yoke or anything else for that matter can be done the same as a real pilot would as well.

The point I was trying to make is the ability to look around is there, but it does take some practice to get use to it.... much like any other "new" action you take up.

What gauge is it in the P38 that you can't see?   Come fly with the 113th Lucky Strikes, all we fly is the P38 and I can't remember the last time I needed to look at a guage.

yes..If you get a Track Ir you can simply look were you want as you would naturally. See it in a nut shell here...>>  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_AO0F5sLdVM

I've been a bit indisposed to keep up with this, but just to mention guys that, yes TIR is great, and my TIR, with my CH stick, throttle and pedals are unfortunately in storage due to various circumstances. But I like to putter around and though I do use arrows and pgup - pgdn, there are times when I find it hard to see all gauges and indicators in various planes. I just thought that a screen that was the full cockpit dash might be useful, and it would only be for quick views, not for continued flying, unless you want to simulate instrument flying, which is not something you'd do in the MA.    :aok
