Title: another one gone......
Post by: CAP1 on May 20, 2013, 05:00:18 PM
Ray Manzarek........passed this afternoon. 74 years old.

i honestly think manzarek and the doors were one of those bands that just never got their due credit.

yep. they were mine too. still are. i dunno why, but it still catches me when they way he was 74. for some reason, i keep thinking of them as the kids that made the best music there was from the 60's.

People rip on them and I have always loved them.   I consider their Debut Album as the Greatest ever in Rock & Roll History.   Ray will be missed.   :frown:

Really loved The Doors. Ray was an amazing musician. His work on Riders on the Storm was magic.

i have an old, but unusually good stereo system in the shop. they were doing all doors music after 5 on 102.9. i cranked it a bit. that came on, and i turned it up to about 15. i was getting odd looks in the shop from out at the pumps. i truly can't get enough of them.

I played drums in a Doors cover band for a few years.

I was always a fan but being on the other side of the speakers and having to learn the material really made me marvel at some of the magic that they put together.

Even as a drummer, Ray was always my favorite (shhhh)

back when i was just dating my ex-wife, we saw crystal ship at great adventure in nj. they were good. it's the closest i've come to seeing the doors for real. and when i closed my eyes, i could see the doors in my minds eye down there performing.

someone else mentioned morrison being a pshco and overshadowing manzarek.......he was a bit off.....but that dude had a golden voice, which melded perfectly with the music that the band made.

I think the Soft Parade still plays shows now and then.

Morrison was a perfect fit for the doors. He also wrote alot of poetry that was off beat you might say.

THE ANATOMY OF ROCK

The 1st electric wildness came
over the people
on sweet Friday.
Sweat was in the air.
The channel beamed,
token of power.
Incense brewed darkly.
Who could tell them that here
it would end?

One school bus crashed w/ a train.
This was the Crossroads.
Mercury stained.
I couldn't get out of my seat.
The road was littered
w/ dead jitterbugs.
Help,
we'll be late for class.

The secret flurry of rumor
marched over the yard &
pinned us unwittingly
Mt. fever.
A girl stripped naked on the
base of the flagpole.

In the restrooms all was cool
& silent
w/ the salt-green of latrines.
Blankets were needed.

Ropes fluttered.
Smiles flattered
& haunted.

Lockers pried open
& secrets discovered.

Ah sweet music.
