How many actually had wings clipped?
Alot of spit 16 pics show full wing length, and I see alot 14's with clipped wings.
-
I believe most of the LF Mk IXs (which is what our Spit16 kind of simulates) had clipped wings.
-
It takes about 30 minutes for a ground crew to change a full span Spitfire to a clipped wing Spitfire, or a clipped wing Spitfire to a full span Spitfire. It was modular.

Wish I could do that in the AH hanger ;) For some reason I positively hate the looks of a clipped Spitfire wing, so I never fly the Spit XVI, instead choosing whatever the AH Spit IX is (some high alt version?).

Take the Mk VIII.

So if I wanted to fly a spit(I don't) with clipped wings, I'd pay 3-4 perks for clipped wings(which I wouldn't do cause I do t fly spits :D)

Would like to have the option on say the Spit V and XIV.
Improved roll rate, slightly higher top speed with slightly worse turning performance.
-
AH is not able, without a lot of additional work, to change flight models based on hangar choices.
-
External ordnance affects the flight model quite a bit...

That is just drag and weight. Easy things to calculate in comparison. How roll rate changes over the speed spectrum between a Spitfire Mk IX and Spitfire Mk XVI is quite a bit different.
I can see how the game could be changed to allow for those kinds of things, but it would require more changes than simply adding a new version of Spitfire.
-
They are all variables. The Ar 234 has bolt-on rocket engines that clearly affect thrust. And I'm pretty sure some of these external weapons also affect directional stability. I.e. they also affect the aircraft aerodynamically, not just drag and weight.
-
Any external wing mount will screw with the aerodynamics to some extent. Just by being there, they disrupt normal a airflow .

Still haven't seen any proof they clipped the XIVs until after the war. The XIVs were not carrying bombs so they kept the full span wing. The clipped Spits were lower alt performers and as with the XVI were ground pounding as there just weren't many air to air targets at that point.
Better to get the clipped Spit XII from 43 Bruv. It would have a grand time in AH with it's performance down low. Highest scoring Spit Squadron in the Fall of 43 in England was 91 flying the XII.
Good looking kite too! :)

Take the Mk VIII.
Only if you want a wee bit extra range and better low alt performance. Otherwise, the Spit 9 or 14 are the better high alt planes. :aok

For general use in AH high altitude performance is of extremely limited value. The Spitfire Mk VIII is superior to the Spitfire Mk IX up to about 20,000ft.

IIRC the flight models use 12-24 points along the wing surface to model flight charachteristics. If that's the case then it shouldn't be much of a problem at all to remove thie wingtip airflow models.
