Title: Golf tournament this weekend
Post by: Curval on May 27, 2013, 01:53:41 PM
This weekend my club Tuckers Point had its biggest tournament, the Member/Guest Shootout Derby.  First time playing in it for me.

The format was two ball best ball....each team member (2 players) play their own ball on each hole and the best score of the twosome is recorded.  Once this is over the top 5 teams qualify for a Shootout in which all 5 teams play the first 4 holes (we miss #4 though because they didn't want two par 3s in the derby (#2 is a par 3 as well as #4) but the teams have to play alternate shots.  All 5 teams played from the first tee and one team was to be eliminated per hole

My buddy Luis and I started off really well in the tournament.  After 10 holes we were 7 under par.  Then things went downhill quickly and we ended up at 5 under for the round.  Not thinking we had a hope of making it to the Shootout we put our clubs in the car and went to have lunch.  Just after we started to eat they posted all the scores.  We were tied for 5th but qualified for the shootout on retrogression (That is the FIRST time retrogression has worked in my favour, I have lost many times because of it).  I had to rush out and get our clubs back on the cart.

Basically everyone who had played in the tournament plus a bunch of guests from the hotel were provided with golf carts to follow the shootout and watch the action.  Luis asked me to hit our drive on hole 1.  There were so many people around the green I had to "excuse me" my way top the boxes.  Normally I would hit a driver from the blue tees but they had put them on a forward area so rather than risk over hitting I used my 3 wood.  Despite the pressure I banged one out with a sweet draw into the middle of the fairway to leave Luis a 120/130 yard approach shot.  However, one team had lost their ball by hitting through the fairway and they couldn't find it.  They went back to the tee, put it in the trap and could not get out of the trap on the next shot....so they conceded the hole.  Down to 4 teams and on to #2.

Luis hit our drive and put it pin high but off the green leaving me with a tricky chip which I flubbed.  Then I missed a putt to beat the other team we were fighting with to stay in the shootout.  We tied the hole and had to replay it.  A member of the other team ended up missing an easy 2 putt to force a second replay so we squeaked through.  Down to 3 teams and on to #3, a long par 5.

I drove our ball straight down the middle...lots of "oos and ahhhs" and I heard a lot of people commenting on how a guy my size (160 lbs soaking wet) could hit the ball so far...lol.  Luis had about 220 to the green and turned to me and said "I am not going to try and make it Chris, too far and I might really screw it up.  How about I put it 100 out for you?"  I agreed and he did exactly what he said he would do.  Due to the pin position I had no green to work with...the flag was way off on the right side of the green with only about 3 feet of green on either side of it from where I was hitting from. The crowd had all gathered on the bank to watch and as I stepped up to hit my shot I actually laughed at how much my knees and hand were shaking.  I stepped away from the shot to compose myself and kept saying "KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN" over and over again to myself.

I took my lob wedge out and struck the best shot of my life.  It landed about a foot in front of the hole, took two bounces and then spun back and *almost* dropped in but it stayed hanging on the lip of the hole.  The director of the tournament called it a gimme...and Luis didn't even need to put.  The birdie kept us safe and in it and we only had to watch as another team got knocked out.

Down to 2 teams and on to the 5th.  Nothing spectacular to report there...I had a putt to win the whole thing from about 5 feet and missed.  Then the other team had a 3 footer to force a playoff...and they missed, handing us the championship.

Made my weekend.  :)

Ya, I was mentally walking through it while reading.  Despite my sucky play I had a great time.  Thanks for the opportunity.

Too funny.  When we won this tournament a couple of weeks ago Luis said to me "Well mate, if people didn't know who you were before this thing, they sure as heck know you now"

I just got off the phone after accepting an invite from a senior guy at HSBC inviting me to play a round tomorrow....with the CEO.  He likes me anyway but may not put 2 and 2 togther until tomorrow....last year at the PGA Grand Slam all of the invitees from HSBC were asked to be in a picture with Padrag Harrington, who won.  I found myself standing right next to Padrag with Mr. Mosley (the CEO) on the other side of me.  I looked at Mosley and said "Well, this is wrong, YOU should be next to him" and switched places. I wonder if he'll remember that, he sure appreciated it at the time.  I couldn't care less, I was just happy to be there.

Either way, we'll be buddies after tomorrow.   :D

It is that, but all it takes is that one sweet shot, hit exactly the way you intended and you forget about how all the other ones sucked.   :D

Good job man!  I love playing golf. Got a little cut/fade I am trying to work out of my swing, I hate them so much they look ugly to me lol.  I would much rather have that beautiful draw!

Just do like I do and try to work the ball either way depending on the angle, etc.  That way, you can have a two way miss and have no idea what's going on when you're not 100% on your game.   :aok

On the bright side, it usually leads to me drinking heavily by the time I hit the turn.  That's a good thing, right?   :uhoh

Drinking and golf don't mix.

1.  It screws up my game entirely
2.  I had a girlfriend almost kill us in a golf cart once after I got drunk and let her drive.  LOL

I tend to hit draws when I swing now.  I wish I could say it was on purpose, but it isn't.

Oh me too.  And for the record I only start drinking once it's clear 80 is but a dream.   :)

Well, I have been trying to solve parts of my game bits at a time.  I am now confident on my drives, long iron and short irons 100 yards or so out.

Where I am getting very frustrated is getting myself on the green and close from 20 yards out.  On Saturday I was TWICE just off the green in 2 shots on the big par 5s.  One was in a bad lie under a mound of grass and the other was in the bunker.  I walked off both of the holes with 8s.  Ridiculous.  500 yards in 2 shots and 6 shots to get 20 yards.

I was struggling with the putter recently, but thankfully that was a confidence thing only and I am back in the grove.

Ehh... bad lie is a bad lie.  Not much you can do except to practice that silly stuff from time to time.  It does pay off though.

As for the close in stuff, are you a "This is my <100 yard club and it is all I use" or are all 14 clubs in play?  I used to be firmly in the former club, but have recently said screw it and started hitting whatever I feel like at that moment will get me dancing.  Paradoxically, this has helped me not think about all the technical stuff so much and seems to be giving more consistent results.   I've hit some wonderful gap wedge pitches lately and have found out that 8/9 irons really are pretty easy to get close in a lot of situations.

I'll go with what works, but nothing seems to work.  A buddy of mine uses a 7 iron almost exclusively, to chip balls.  He is absolutely deadly around the greens.  I tried one of those and pushed it off the back of the green on Saturday....went back to the lob wedge because I feel more comfortable with it.

I went and hit a bucket of balls yesterday after watching some youtube videos of Phil Mickelson demonstrating his "hinge and hold" chipping technique and may have found my answer.  We'll see.

I have the DVD.  :D

It should give you more consistent contact after you've gotten used to doing it.  After that, it's a matter of picking your spot on the green and hitting it.  The ball should release just like you think it will because your contact won't vary as much.

That's the theory, anyway.   :D

LOL

I totally understand why you'd have the video.  He makes a pretty compelling case for his method and the results speak for themselves.  (I am dying to try the reverse bunker shot one day, have you seen him do that on the dvd?)

There is a family championship that my youngest son and daughter are planning to play in on Saturday.  (my wife is leaving today to go and pick up my oldest and take him to Miami for a week to reward him for a spectacular year in school abroad, so we are short two players.)  Big pressure for me, it is captain's choice but the kids are too old to take advantage of the fact that ages 0-6 can hit from the 100 yard markers and 7-8 can hit from the 150 mark.  My daugher (the youngest) is now 9.  So, on the par 5s and long par 4s I will have my work cut out for me.  The kids have to hit from the red (lady's) tees.

Their reaction is funny when I mishit a shot - so dissapointed in me.  "Awwww DADDY!!!"  Meanwhile those who have young kids are hitting shot #2 from less than 100 or 150!!

I can't complain though, we have a few trophies from when they were younger..lol
