Sixty years ago today, on May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

I believe you need the qualifier "and survived" because of course there is a very good chance that Mallory and Irvine summited 29 yrs earlier. :old:
Just a peeve of mine as a George Mallory fan, no disrespect to Hillary and Norgay intended.
