Little guy E.Brown frightened himself recording Mach 0.87 in a Tempest test.

Took a bit of brute force to heave it around, but those big tough 2nd TAF Kiwis loved 'em.

The Tempest's high-Mach excellent dive & zoom with lateral manoeuvring capability is

exactly what the Fw 190 & Bf 109 found difficult, when they did their split-S & dive routine.

Of course, the poor Mach number-capable P-38 was found wanting against 750kmh Vne e/a..

& this is one reason why they did not do do as well in the ETO.. as the PTO..
