Reincarnated Vasily Zaytsev?

juvenile yellowjacket..

Yep.....the ones you find inside your soda can that end up stinging your lip.

I honestly believe it is a type of fly that mimics being a bee. Because they don't sting or bite. Pretty common in my area too, I just don't know what they are or their name.

Its a hover fly apparently

Hmm my kids have been playing with bugs that look sort of like that, here in Las Vegas. I'll have to let them know they might get bit.

Hey Nef... nice pics! For whatever reason that forth one really calls out.. Great example of depth of field.
What camera/lens?

Perhaps a Sphaerophoria Scripta (M) hoverfly?

A Battle Bee? Is it trying to lock-and-load the rifle?

I thought that bugs became instantly mummified when exposed to the Vegas heat?

Amazing photos Nef.......We call those sweat bees up here in PA, not sure what its real genus is.

Myth. Lots of bugs here. Only "good" thing about bugs here is that the desert recluse spider, although still very bad news, is reputed to be way less grumpy than the common brown recluse. I've read reports of kids playing with them for hours without getting bit. Yea it was on the internets, but the stories are fairly consistent pointing to the desert recluse being more tolerant to accidental contact.

That is Rasputin, reincarnated.. :lol
Romanov's still cant get rid of that sucker...

We got sweat bees, but they are black and look like little mini wasps, and they bite/sting. They are roughly the same size as these hover flies, but look much different.
