James Gandolphini died today from a heart attack at age 51.

Pretty bummed to hear this on the radio out driving around with the roof off the car today. I could see other people on the news in traffic saying "holy #@#@#" at the same time I was, a pretty surreal experience really.
True Romance was one of my favorite movies in my youth, and I still watch it at least every year. James's character in that film was so incredible it is no wonder he reached the heights he did. If anyone has the time or interest, look up the "Actor's Studio" on uTube, and watch Gandolfini's interview there. It's worth your time if you're a fan in the slightest, and I found myself thinking about some of the things he said about life, and specifically his life, in the last hour or so.
If you don't follow pop culture like my wife does, you may not know that HBO had green lit a new series with Gandolfini being the star, a 7 episode deal called "Criminal Justice" about him playing a screwed up lawyer, for later next year. Apparently David Chase was working on a Sopranos movie for 2015 as well. It's very sad that none of that will ever come to pass now, as at 51 one of the greatest actors of my generation can only be remembered for past work now.
I would add as an edit, commentary on how our society works today, that Gandolfini's wikipedia page had him updated as dead by the time I got home, less than an hour after the announcement.

Oh man I hated to hear this, I really enjoyed his role in The Sopranos and was holding out hope for a sequel. On another note he visited the wounded Soldiers and Marines at Center for the Intrepid located next to Brooke Army Medical Center. My son was recovering from his wounds and going through rehab there during the visit. He said Mr Gandolfini was a very warm and friendly visitor, eagerly
visiting with the guys and gals recovering there. R.I.P.

You know Shifty, I'm ashamed to say I had completely forgotten about his work with and for wounded veterans. He did a special on HBO about wounded soldiers recently, and volunteered his time and money in causes about it, even traveled to Iraq during the war with a few other Sopranos actors like Tony Scirico (Paulie). I know from seeing his face in his documentary that seeing wounded kids really really bothered him, and was something he was passionate about.
I always like him as he started out in life as a college guy working also as a doorman, bartender and club manager, which was exactly how I started out at 18. I always respected him for the work he did for our countries wounded soldiers.

My son said Tony Scirico also visted that day. One of the wounded guys yelled Hey Paulie! and Thomas said Mr Scirico went right into character and it was hilarious. :lol I recall watching an HBO special with James Gandolphini interviewing wounded vets, the title was something like Live Day Alive Day or Life Day. Yes I appreciated his work for wounded veterans. :)

I too heard today about his passing, but didn't realize it until the end of the "inside the actors studio" interview on local radio. That's too bad, it seems like he being the salt of the earth, blue collar kind of guy he was, that the "everyman" has lost a hero. :pray
