Hello,
Please end the Spit14's for free experiment.
Like anyone that has played more than 6 months = yes I can shoot them down. Just seems like 8 outta 10 planes I encounter are Spit14s.
My preference is more diversity in planes encountered. Spit16s never seemed this prevalent.
...OR I am wrong and it is just me that is encountering them at that rate.
Thanks,
Slade :salute

Late War Tour 161:
Spitfire Mk XIV: Kills: 3442 Deaths: 3148
Spitfire Mk XVI: Kills: 6605 Deaths: 5446
It is apparently just you.
-
Are we seeing more spitfires in general because of the 14 or are they mostly converted (other) spit flyers?
-
Ya I still run into more spit16 than any other spit.

Lusche said that the Spit XIV numbers looked to have been drawn mainly from the Spitfire Mk VIII and P-51D numbers.

There is a very slight increase in overall Spitfire usage, as most (but not all) current 14 pilots came over from other planes (most notably P-51 and La-7). But it might very well be that after a while many of those will be back in their original rides.
In the last 168 hours (=7 days), the Spit 14 had 24% of all Spitfire kills and deaths. That makes it the second most used Spit after the 16 (41%).
During the same time, the P51D had almost 2.5 times more kills than the 14 with a higher K/D to boot, but nobody complains about that ;)
Details will follow after the end of the tour :salute

Do you think it is context? That is, in certain types of instances they are more prevalent (used more).
Thanks for your feedback. :salute

Plays definitely a role.
Te type of planes a player encounters most often can depend quite a bit on how and where he is fighting.
For example, despite their immense popularity, Spitfires are not near the top of my personal "most killed" lists, because I was mostly a defensive fighter and high altitude flyer. A genuine furballer will encounter a much higher portion of Spits and other TnB planes than I ever had.

^^^^
That
I bet Lusche/Snailman, being a strat raider nut, has met far more 163s than spitfires. While I, being the dogfighter/furballer, have met tons of spits and almost have never seen a 163.

Well, it's not that ecessive. :lol
In fact, until the advent of the B-29 I almost never flew into "Komet Kountry" (tm). :uhoh
But the B-29 itself would make a good example - I have shot down more B-29s than most players will ever see in their entire AH career. Not because I'm so dam good or have so much luck, but just because being a high alt buff hunter when flying fighters I simply encountered so many more.
If you furball or play the good ole smash'n'grab game, you might only see one every few tours. In both cases, it will be mostly Spitfires you are facing.
Well, as I'm now hijacking this thread anyway, I can also add this:
The ubiquitous Spit 16 is only rank 10 on my all time "planes most killed" list. I'd estimate that for most players it would be much higher ranked.

It's different but not surprising to see that much usage.
Also, historicaly, many SpitXIVs were manufactured, it wasn't an uncommon late war spit to encounter by any stretch.
-
I wouldn't worry too much about it. After the new shiny phase, very few are likely to stick with it as it's one of the more user unfriendly planes in the game. Give it a couple months, I think its numbers will recede significantly.

957.
More than Tempests or Fw190D-9s, less than Bf109K-4s.

Spit 14 looks the coolest! If only we bad an option to clip it's wings :furious

My opinion is that the spit14 is certainly not a Scourge at all. In most of my encounters I find that it is flown exactly as one would fly a 16. The result of that is that it is very much easier to beat than either of the later.
It is inferior in turn and roll performance to a 16, but better in speed. The planes rate of climb at typical MA altitudes is pretty similar to a 16 and between 18 to 20K or so markedly inferior.
In the MA compared with the 16 you get a plane than handles worse near and in stall, doesnt turn as well, doesnt roll as well and although it is faster it is not fast enough to really compete with the real speed demons out there.
It certainly is not a scourge in the MA.
-
The real scourge of course is the F4u1A :noid
Oddly not used enough to be branded as such.
-
"Scourge" TRANSLATION- "P-51 jocks are used to their run-stangs having 20 mph on Spits instead of a virtual dead heat". :D

I think only about 100 less than spit XVIs too, and I doubt it'll ever be in the long-run even 90% as popular as the current XVI in AH, but %50 at the moment is pretty cool.
And yes, it's a blast against runstangs.
-
Rich46yo,
No need to use derogatory terms for the airplanes. Just call them P-51s or Mustangs and say that some players who are used to being able to just run from Spitfires in them have issues with the Mk XIV.

Spit XVI is really a Spitfire LF.Mk IX, it just has an American built Merlin, so you have to combine those production numbers and you end up with 4500 or 5000 of them.

When I see an enemy spit 14 and I am in a fighter, I rejoice in having found a spit I will most likely shoot down in short order.
-
Well there you go. Spit 14 usage has jumped significantly.
Thanks for posting. It is always useful to have the facts. :salute
