Title: Anyone here play or know anyone who plays bagpipes?
Post by: Curval on June 23, 2013, 07:29:57 AM
My son is now playing them, he's even taking the pipes as his music "elective" for next year so his music grade will be based on them as his primary instrument.

Looking for sheet music for this song (can't find it in the school's repertoire):

Any help would be appreciated.

The song is titled "Sgt. Mackenzie" if that helps. I'm looking for the sheet music now. But so far this is what I'm coming up with ,  "There is no commercially available bagpipe sheet music for this tune."

I have a friend who goes to scotland to participate in compitions. Last year the L.A. Group placed 3rd in the world. When they play they wear the whole set up. Kilt( not sure which tartan, but it's not the Mackenzie clans), socks, dirk, leather waist pouch, and I forget what else. I'll ask him if he has the sheet music for that song.

Ah yes, the sounds of a tyro walking the house with a cat tucked under his arm and the cat's tail in his mouth :)

I have a friend of friend who's a bagpiper. Last time I met him was in Spain. You have no idea of the impact of a bagpiper in Spain!

Watch him with the girls Curval. No knickers under that kilt.

10.00am Sunday morning...a perfect time to let the neighbors know you can now play the bagpipes.  lol

He's really good.  I'm not just saying that because he's my son.  He took the pipes to my father's place last night.  My father was pipe major at St. Andrews College for two years.  My son only got the actual pipes a couple of months ago and my father commented that there was no way he could play like that in that short period of time.

We just had the Highland Games here in Bermuda.  I emailed the head of the Bermuda Pipe Band and told them about my son.  They seem to think that mana has fallen from the sky.  A 13 year old who already plays the pipes!!  They want him to play with them, like yesterday!

Ok I read that yesterday, bit my tongue, read it today and had to comment.

Socks = Hose
Dirk = Sgian Duth (Dirk is about twice as long)
Leather Waist Pouch = Sporran

He should also wear Flashes, which are the tartan around the legs and proper Kilt dancing shoes. Anything else including Hiking boots is sacrilige. If I see a photo of him with Trainers on, know I will hunt him down.

Ok, back on topic.
I've posted this to my facebook page to see if any of my piper mates have the music. None of them do. Are you sure that's the proper title of the song? Has it been shortened? Any other information would be appreciated. I'll see what I can do.

I pity you as a father though, if the boy can play the full pipes at 13 then he has one heck of a set of lungs on him! Pity you when he screamed as a baby!

Ha!  He was a good baby actually, didn't scream at all.

As a matter of fact he has had asthma his entire life.  The pipes have helped that situation out and he hasn't had any issues since he went away to school.

I can't really give much more detail on the song.  First time I heard it was when I saw "We Were Soldiers"....the scene of the attack by the Americans just as the NVA were about to attack.

It's here (but doesn't have the piping in it, just the lyrics):

The song *is* called Sgt. Mackenzie, that is all I know.  I want to have my son play the intro and then I plan on signing the song on Remembrance Day.

Curval, my dad is Scottish and been playing the pipes for over 50 years, military and civilian pipe bands. He might have the sheet music for this if it's an original Scottish pipe song and not a recent (adapted for movie) song. If successful in finding the music I'll send you a PM and will be able to scan and email it to you..

By the way congrats to your son learning to play, fantastic sound, I can play a little but nothing like my dad. You will always be invited to plenty of New Years parties if you can play the pipes. :-)

The song originated from one of the World Wars....I think WW2.

"Ne'er more, shall I see the sun
For I fell, to a German's gun"

I'd be grateful for any help your dad can give though.

I'll post up a video when I catch him playing next time.  I was "piped" into the kitchen when I got home last night...lol

Tell him about Jack Churchill.

it originated from Ww1, by the Lady Mackenzie, who's husband was killed in France. Although I have found information about it online, I can not find the music and I'm afraid none of my friends can find it either. I will keep asking.

I am led to believe that the author of the music for this song kept it hidden away and did not make it public.  This is why it is so hard to find....fact is, you can't.

I asked my son if he could just figure it out and he looked at me like I was crazy.

Curval, could be right, I've searched through Dad's collection of music sheet books and couldn't find anything and my Dad never heard of it before.

What a shame, great piece of music.

Next Wednesday we have a bunch of clients in for meetings.  That night there is a dinner at which my father and the advisor to the Group's birthdays' will be recognised.  My son will play at this event and I have been told to take a video of it for one of the directors who could not make it.  Maybe I'll post that.

This afternoon I took my son to meet the instructors at the Bda Pipe Band .  There were two instructors there and one older gentleman.  When I introduced myself the older man stopped and said "Are you anything to do with Arthur Morris?"  "That's my father and THAT *pointing at my son* is his grandson." I replied.  My boy had just started to play his chanter with one of the teachers.  My father was actually one of the founders of the Bda Pipe Band.  He never played with them, but he was the head instructor when they started it.  The guy kind of stood there with his mouth open and then broke into a huge smile.  As more members came in each was informed of the fact that my dad's grandson was playing either the chanter or the pipes.

These guys were pretty darn psyched about the whole situation.  There was another kid who started playing last September there having his final lesson of the year.  He was nowhere close to playing the pipes.  One of the instructors asked my son who was his piping teacher at school.  WHen my son told him who the guy was (I can't spell his name Mcgillvery maybe) he said "Well yes, he's in charge of the program I'm sure but who actually does the classes?"  My son repeated the name.  That just about blew his mind.  Apparently he is somewhat of a legend in the bagpipe world, at least in North America.  The OTHER instructor came over and said that he had planned to fly to Canada twice a month for lessons with this guy but that job circumstances didn't allow it in the end.  He would have done it gladly though apparently.

This second instructor then proceeded to give my son an hour an a half of instruction, mostly on the chanter, but some pipe work too.  In the first five minutes he taught him to play "Happy Birthday" for the party next week and then they went through the songs my son has been assigned to learn this summer.  The two of them just sat there going through each song bar by bar and piece by piece.  It was really something to watch.  The guy was really cool and very interested in helping my son. He's offered to get together with him as much as possible before my son leaves for his summer holiday in Florida and for the 3 weeks he's home afterwards.  Any free half hour here or hour there he said.  Couldn't ask for anything better.

Oh, and apparently Sgt. McKenzie has been put to music and the first instructor we spoke to is certain he can put his hands on it.  He knew the tune immediately when I mentioned it.  If not he said he could easily write it out himself.  He couldn't find any manuscript to give it a try then and there though.  So, I should have a copy of it soon, if any of your buddies are interested.

My son played last night at the client related dinner.  A couple of squeaks but he did really well.  The darn camera shut off before he played Happy Birthday, I guess I hit the button by accident which is a shame.

The lighting sucks, but here is my boy playing his first "gig" five months after starting to learn:
