Title: El Paso, TX
Post by: DaveJ on June 23, 2013, 08:40:31 PM
Anyone here from the El Paso, Texas area? I'm getting stationed at Ft. Bliss there starting the middle of July. Any advice, tips, suggestions, or recommendations for that are would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Davey

We're not allowed there, and wouldn't go even if I could! Thanks though.  :lol

it sucks, i was stationed there. Juarez was called the zoo. we could go there but it was advisable to stay in a group. to party there was cheap just have bribe cash for the police, mexican jail is not fun. the good part was they built a new one just before i got there in 89, that new jail had a roof. the old one did not.

make the trip to dallas and visit ah if you have a chance.  I stayed in dallas once and I could see the ah building from my window.  was there for a week and still regret not going over to visit.  next year, i am planing to go hopefully my name is not on the "do not enter" list again :).

It's hot,, try to stay cool, I went across the border when I could,,  but no one told us we couldn't back in the 80s,, McGregor range was fun,, nice little NCO club that served the best bloody Mary's ever,,, opened around eleven every morning!

Did Basic Training there in 1966 and the after graduation trip to Juarez was the high point, was quite a party town then.
Spent 3 months at Beaumont hospital coming back from Vietnam in 68 and went over the border a few times for fun.
Sad to see Juarez turned into such a off-limits hellhole, was a good blowing off steam playground for the troops in days gone by.

I will bet they do not want any soldiers kidnapped by the cartels down there, that would nightmare for the state dept. There was a bar that we used to on dyer street called Gaby's, did a lot of drinking there.
